In simpler terms, we’re saying goodbye to the Gemstone clan as season 4 of “The Righteous Gemstones,” a Danny McBride-created HBO comedy, has been declared its final chapter. This series, much like his previous HBO shows, “Vice Principals” and “Eastbound & Down,” is known for its over-the-top humor. It takes aim at reality by portraying a fictional family who run a southern megachurch and come up with outlandish schemes to promote their religion.
How Many Episodes Will the Final Season Have?
Similar to all previous seasons, the ninth and final season of The Righteous Gemstones is set to consist of nine episodes. The opening episode is scheduled for release on Sunday, March 9 at 10 p.m. ET on HBO East and 10 p.m. PT on HBO West. Simultaneously, the first episode will be made available on Max around the same time. Each subsequent episode will air weekly on Sundays at the same time, with the series finale projected for May 4 (unless there are any delays).
As a passionate cinephile, I can’t contain my excitement with the unveiling of the first three episode titles! The journey begins with “Prelude,” an exploration into the ancestral roots of the enigmatic Gemstone family. The subsequent episodes promise to be as intriguing: “You Hurled Me Into the Depths, Into the Very Heart of the Seas” and “To Grieve Like the Rest of Men Who Have No Hope.” Each title tantalizingly hints at emotional turmoil, mystery, and adventure that lies ahead in this captivating series.

Who’s in Season 4 of ‘The Righteous Gemstones‘?
In the upcoming fourth season of The Righteous Gemstones, we’ll see all the primary gemstones making a return. Danny McBride continues to headline as Jesse Gemstone, with his wife Amber, played by Cassidy Freeman, also being present. Their family of three children – Gideon (Skyler Gisondo), Pontius (Kelton DuMont), and Abraham (Gavin Munn) – will take on significant roles throughout the new season.
Jesse carries on collaborating with his siblings Judy and Kelvin, portrayed by Edi Patterson and Adam Devine respectively. Each of Jesse’s siblings has a significant other as well; Judy is accompanied by her husband BJ (Tim Baltz), while Kelvin is joined by his boyfriend Keefe Chambers (Tony Cavalero). In the final season, the trio of Gemstone siblings make a trip to Florida to persuade their father Eli Gemstone (played by John Goodman) to return to their church.
In the upcoming season, we welcome back a beloved character, Baby Billy Freeman, portrayed by Walton Goggins. Known as the brother of Eli Gemstone’s late wife, Aimee-Leigh Gemstone, Baby Billy often stirs up trouble among the Gemstone family. His spouse, Tiffany Freeman, played by Valyn Hall, is also set to reappear. Moreover, Stephen Dorff, who graced our screens as Vance Simkins, an evangelical pastor, will make a comeback in season four, promising more conflicts with the Gemstones.
During the fourth season, three fresh faces are joining as guest stars. Megan Mullally takes on the role of Lori Milsap, a longtime friend of the Gemstones who once penned songs for Aimee-Leigh. Seann William Scott portrays her son, Corey, while Arden Myrin plays his wife, Jana.
The Final Season Promises Wild Plots
Danny McBride continues to challenge conventions in comedy for numerous years, and this trend persists with the last season of “The Righteous Gemstones“. In season 4, the Gemstone family concocts peculiar plans to expand their megachurch. Jesse and his kin devise “prayer pods,” intended as intimate spaces for worship (though they come at a charge), yet their privacy makes them ideal spots for illicit activities. Meanwhile, Baby Billy dreams up a venture of his own with the creation of a show titled “Teenjus,” focusing on Jesus during his teenage years.
In my perspective as a film critic, this captivating tale takes an exhilarating turn when the Gemstone siblings acquire jetpacks – yes, you read that right! Jetpacks! The narrative then veers off to sunny Florida, where they strive to retrieve their father in time for him to make a special appearance during a church fundraiser, which coincides with their late mother’s birthday. But wait, there’s more! The unpredictable element that adds an extra layer of zaniness to this already intriguing storyline is the arrival of the ultimate mischief-maker – a monkey – later on in the series. Buckle up for a wild ride!
The upcoming episode titled “Prelude” delves deeper into the history of the Gemstone family, transporting us to the 1800s during the Civil War era. In this period, their forebearer initially served as a Confederate preacher, but an unexpected divine intervention is hinted at in the episode’s synopsis. Conversely, in the current timeline, Jesse Gemstone finds himself embroiled in a conflict of his own, as he declares in the trailer that “a war is being waged against Christianity.
In the concluding chapter, expect a blend of laughter and tears as we delve into comedy and drama alike. BJ’s decision to learn pole-dancing causes friction with Judy. The duo “Prism,” led by Kelvin and Keefe, experiences challenges as Kelvin grapples with prejudice during his pursuit of the title “Top Christ-Follower.” Meanwhile, Baby Billy contends with the reality that he may not live as long as his spouse, a truth that brings forth profound implications for her. Despite the seemingly heavy themes across just nine episodes, this season sets the stage for an explosive and unforgettable finale to one of TV’s most unpredictable series.
