Aamir Khan says South films are ‘very mass and deep-rooted’ compared to Bollywood films; Javed Akhtar reacts to high ticket price debate

In preparation for Aamir Khan’s 60th birthday on March 14, a unique film festival called “Aamir Khan: The Magician of Cinema” by PVR INOX was introduced today. This event was also graced by the esteemed lyricist Javed Akhtar. During this gathering, both veterans discussed their insights about the difficulties faced by the Hindi film industry and how it could learn from the successes of Southern cinema.

At a recent Q&A session, Aamir Khan emphasized the distinctive methods used in movie production between Bollywood and the Southern film industry.

He expressed that instead of concentrating on general themes such as anger, love, and revenge, we should create movies centered around conviction, similar to the way films are made in the South. These films were once referred to as “single-screen” movies, characterized by mass appeal and strong roots. It’s possible that Bollywood is putting more emphasis on productions meant for multiplexes.

In addition, he discussed the predicament facing the Hindi film industry and emphasized that audiences are encouraged to watch the movie in cinemas. If they choose not to go to theaters, however, the film will be available for them on an OTT platform within eight weeks, at no extra cost since they’ve already subscribed. He expressed his confusion about how one can sell a product twice.

Previously, I would watch movies out of necessity, but now it’s due to my interest in films. This shift has essentially altered our original business strategy. At the same time, Javed Akhtar, seated beside him, advocated for a longer break of about three to four months between cinema and streaming premieres.

In simple terms, both veterans remained hopeful about the industry rebounding. Khan emphasized that learning from past mistakes is key in this cycle. Akhar added, “If we grasp this quickly, it’s good. If not, we might have to sell everything, even our bicycles.

Furthermore, the renowned lyricist was questioned about the expensive ticket prices of multiplexes compared to those single-screen theaters still operating in the South. In response, Akhtar emphasized the comfortable amenities offered by multiplexes, which justify their cost. He stated that people pay for these facilities because they can afford them.
