Think of the biggest names in Hollywood.
- Spielberg
- Tarantino
- Scorsese
- Villeneuve
- Hanks
- Streep
Apart from their exceptional talents and positive reputation, they all share an agreement on a matter – not speaking against the Academy Awards’ decision to implement diversity quotas for Best Picture nominees.
As a movie buff, I’ve noticed that since 2024, the rules have been changed for movies contending for the prestigious title of Best Picture. Now, these films must meet certain criteria to be eligible. For instance, they should delve into themes concerning marginalized communities or ensure their crew comprises under-represented groups, reflecting a more diverse and inclusive film industry landscape.
No, conservatives and Christians need not apply.
Last year’s “Reagan,” for example, didn’t make the cut. It’s not alone.
Instead of focusing on specific details, consider taking a broader perspective. Imposing diversity quotas on artistic works contradicts the essence that awards like the Oscars should uphold – showcasing the cream of the crop in cinematic masterpieces.
However, it’s worth noting that as of 2023, just one prominent figure in Hollywood has publicly expressed disagreement with the principles these DEI-style rules seem to uphold. Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfus went so far as to express his disapproval, stating that these rules make him feel sick to his stomach.
Now, a second person has lashed out at the diversity mandates.
Justine Bateman, former sitcom actress now turned writer and director, recently spoke about this topic via her social media platform. One of her followers inquired about her views on the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) guidelines that have been implemented at the Oscars.
She didn’t mince her words.
It’s an insult to filmmaking. https://t.co/kieT0uDLtc

“It’s an insult to filmmaking.”
And she’s right.
Why don’t more Hollywood figures express similar views? It seems they might be hesitant, fearing potential backlash, even if they genuinely hold those beliefs.
As a devoted cinephile, I’ve found myself constantly in the crossfire lately, much like Dreyfus. The media seems to have taken a dislike to me, and their coverage over the past few years hasn’t exactly been warm or supportive.
Coincidence?
It’s possible that the stars hold memories of the strong reaction when Stephen King championed quality over diversity. The response from the progressive community was intense, causing the renowned horror author to retreat his stance promptly.
Bateman refuses to issue an apology. She’s previously challenged Hollywood’s forward-thinking mindset by implicitly criticizing the Biden administration’s restrictive environment on free speech. She isn’t a MAGA supporter, but rather a person who values independent thought, which is becoming less frequent in her industry.
Perhaps her statement could inspire other artists to challenge the DEI Oscars as well, showing how courage can spread.
