Aimee Lou Wood, who is charming and lovable, is consistently demonstrating her exceptional acting skills in Hollywood, having initially gained widespread recognition for leading the popular British teen dramedy “Sex Education.” Since then, she has displayed her remarkable talent in series like “Alice & Jack” and “Daddy Issues,” as well as films such as “The Electrical Life of Louis Wain,” “Living,” and “Seize Them!”. In early 2024, it was revealed that Wood will be joining the illustrious cast for season three of the critically acclaimed HBO series “The White Lotus“.
The charmingly satirical drama-comedy has boosted the popularity of the actress even more, as viewers have grown fond of her lively and spirited character Chelsea, who makes an appearance at the resort in the title with her brooding older boyfriend Rick (portrayed by Walton Goggins). This year, 2025, has been a fruitful one for the actress, with her latest role in the Netflix drama miniseries Toxic Town, which delves deeply into the infamous Corby toxic waste case and depicts how a harmful dust led to birth defects in newborns. Wood, Jodie Whittaker, and Claudia Jessie play brave mothers who strive for justice for their children and themselves.
A Painfully Powerful Look at a Toxic Waste Tragedy
This compelling drama miniseries, titled “Toxic Town,” delves into the heartbreaking 2009 Corby toxic waste case. The story unfolds following the tragic incident where infants were born with birth defects and missing limbs due to a harmful dust contaminating the air. This dust was unintentionally spilled during the transportation of toxic waste when Corby Borough Council was revitalizing its steelmaking plant as part of an urban regeneration project between 1984 and 1999. A star-studded cast, headed by Jodie Whittaker, Aimee Lou Wood, and Claudia Jessie, brings this powerful narrative to life on screen.
In the moving Netflix production, Whittaker portrays Susan McIntyre, a mother who grows wary when her newborn son is born with an unusual hand deformity. This prompts her to share a hospital room with another parent whose child also has a similar condition. A disturbing phone call from a journalist, revealing that a news article was imminent, accusing mothers near a toxic waste site of having higher rates of birth defects, propels Susan into action. She teams up with fellow mothers Tracey Taylor (Wood) and Maggie Mahon (Claudia Jessie) to challenge the situation, seeking justice for their children.
The four-part miniseries delves into one of the UK’s most significant environmental controversies, often referred to as the “British Erin Brockovich.” This long-standing issue required a grueling 10-year legal battle before 18 families could stand in court to assert that the release of toxic substances into the air might have impacted expectant mothers. Jack Thorne penned Toxic Town to narrate an “extraordinary tale” that would acknowledge and illuminate “these witty, courageous, remarkable women and their tireless efforts on behalf of their children.” They battled heroically for the truth to be disclosed and to prevent a similar disaster from recurring.
‘Toxic Town’ Honors the Legacy of the Case’s Real-Life Mothers
Back in 2019, I stepped into the limelight with my captivating portrayal of Aimee Gibbs in the beloved British series “Sex Education.” This role not only resonated with fans but also earned me a BAFTA TV Award for Best Female Comedy Performance. Since then, I’ve been fortunate enough to expand my repertoire with roles in shows like “Alice & Jack” and “Daddy Issues,” as well as films such as “Living” and “Seize Them!”
However, the most exciting turn in my career came when I was cast as Chelsea in the sensational HBO series “The White Lotus.” In this show, I bring to life a vibrant, ever-optimistic young woman named Chelsea who embarks on an adventure with her rugged and enigmatic older boyfriend Rick Hatchett (played by Walton Goggins), to the breathtaking Thailand resort that is the setting for the series.
In the series Sex Education and The White Lotus, Wood showcases her remarkable acting talent and charm, while her captivating performance as Tracey Taylor in the miniseries Toxic Town further underscores her screen presence. As the heart-wrenching mother of a child born with a deformed ear who tragically passed away soon after birth, Tracey is portrayed as being supportive friends with Susan McIntyre, played by Jodie Whittaker. In the tense drama, she encourages both Susan and other mothers to join the lawsuit and make their voices heard.
In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, playwright Jack Thorne gushed about his exceptional cast, referring to them as a dream team. He expressed disbelief at being able to work with such talented individuals and their willingness to be part of the story. Moreover, he mentioned that each actor brought something fresh and unexpected to their roles that he had never seen before. In a separate interview with Radio Times in February 2025, actress Wood shared her inspiration for portraying real-life Corby mother Tracey Taylor. Her primary focus was to do justice to Taylor’s struggles and unwavering strength in her performance.
“Experiencing something that reveals an awkward reality seems significant to me. I was astonished by her strength. She doesn’t consider herself a hero in any way, but other mothers do. And it was empowering because, although I’m concerned about people’s reactions, knowing Tracey was content made the task complete.
The drama series titled “Toxic Town” debuted on February 27, 2025, and garnered widespread praise from critics almost immediately. It currently boasts a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, a testament to its deeply moving narrative, intense portrayal of grief and rage, and exceptional acting by its gifted cast. Particularly noteworthy were the performances of leads Whittaker and Wood, who captured the resilience and determination of their characters, the devastated mothers, with critics and audiences alike praising them for their powerful portrayals. The London Evening Standard, in particular, praised the “Sex Education” star in their glowing review, commending her performance.
Aimee Lou Wood delivers a remarkable performance as sensitive and endearing character Tracey. Much like many individuals, she tends to steer clear of conflict, but life compels her to dive headfirst into uncharted waters in her quest for justice.
