Mickey 17` Wins Worst Weekend of 2025

In its initial release, the movie titled “Mickey 17” secured the top position at the box office. However, it also earned the unfortunate title of being part of the least profitable three-day stretch in 2025. If the estimates are correct, the period from March 7 to March 9 will be remembered as the financially poorest weekend of that year. Despite Mickey 17 earning $19.1 million domestically, the total earnings for all films during that three-day span reached a yearly low of $53.38 million.

The record for the least profitable weekend in 2025 (February 28 – March 2) was established only seven days ago, with a disappointing earnings of $53.552 million. This was primarily driven by “Captain America: Brave New World,” which previously held the top spot. Interestingly, despite “Mickey 17” from Warner Bros. Pictures earning a global total of $53.3 million, it’s unlikely that its executives are celebrating. That’s because this Robert Pattinson-led sci-fi adventure performed better overseas ($34.2 million) than in North America, but it still needs to recover its massive production budget of $118 million. Furthermore, “Mickey 17” faces financial challenges, but that’s not all it has to worry about.

It seems that both critics and audiences shared similar views about director Bong Joon-ho’s latest film, which can be described as fairly average. The movie’s “B” CinemaScore aligns with its 78% Tomatometer rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but its audience score on Popcornmeter (previously the RT audience score) is slightly lower at 73%. Despite the general mediocrity, the film’s opening weekend is expected to be a letdown. However, there was some good news for the movie industry, as one Oscar-winning project managed to shine.

‘Anora’ Reaches New Heights With Expanded Post-Oscars Release

Previously dominating the box office, the movie “Captain America: New World Order,” garnered the second position this weekend with a revenue of $8.5 million. The recent Marvel Cinematic Universe installment has amassed a global earnings of $370.8 million so far. However, given the declining sales, it’s becoming increasingly unlikely that the Captain America film starring Anthony Mackie and Harrison Ford will surpass the $500 million mark in revenue.

Over the weekend, Focus Features’ film “Last Breath” earned the third spot, bringing in $4.2 million. Meanwhile, “The Monkey” held on to the fourth position with a revenue of $3.9 million. In the Top 5, “Paddington in Peru” finished strong with $3.85 million. The box office had an uneventful weekend overall, but at least one movie managed to generate some significant earnings.

At the box office this weekend, the big winner of the 97th Academy Awards, “Anora,” made a significant impact, earning $1.9 million and landing at the 7th spot. This film, which was nominated for Best Picture in 2025, re-entered the Top 10 after experiencing an incredible increase of 595%, having made just $267,526 the previous week. After expanding its theatrical release to more than 1,900 venues, it climbed back into the top tier. Initially, the dramedy led by Mikey Madison (who won Best Actress) managed to crack the Top 10 in its second week of release (October 25, 2024), at No. 8. However, after winning five Oscars, it has experienced a resurgence in cinemas, giving writer and director Sean Baker’s film renewed life.

Apart from Mickey 17, two other fresh faces made it into the Top 10 list during the weekend. Rule Breakers ($1.6 million) ranked 9th, while In the Lost Lands ($1 million) claimed the 10th position. The weekend’s top per-theater average of $10,540 was earned by Music Box Films’ Eephus, which premiered in a limited release (2 cinemas), amassing a total of $21,080.

2025’s movie lineup expands on March 14 with “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie,” led by Jack Quaid in “Novocaine,” and the pairing of Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender in “Black Bag.” Additionally, A24’s “Opus” joins this exciting lineup. With such a crowded field, it might be challenging for “Mickey 17” to maintain its No. 1 position next weekend. The situation becomes even more intense as the contentious “Snow White” reinterpretation, featuring Gal Gadot and Rachel Zegler, premieres in cinemas on March 21.
