Bong Joon-Ho Reveals How Robert Pattinson Overcame Language Barriers in ‘Mickey 17’

Director Bong Joon-ho, known for masterpieces such as Memories of Murder and the Oscar-winning Parasite, has just released his latest creation, titled Mickey 17. This sci-fi dark comedy features an impressive cast including alongside Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, and Mark Ruffalo. Although this isn’t Bong’s first foray into English films, Korean is his native language. During film productions, he relies on a translator but, surprisingly, Robert Pattinson played a significant role in overcoming the language obstacle.

You may recall Sharon Choi, the reliable translator who was with Bong Joon-ho during the Academy Awards where “Parasite” triumphed as the main winner. Later on, she collaborated with the director in the creation of “Mickey 17”. In an interview with Collider, the director disclosed that Choi was a crucial figure on set, but Robert Pattinson played a significant role in overcoming the challenging language barrier that arose during production. “Mickey 17” marked a departure for the director, as he lacked the resources he had when working on his Korean-language films.

For my projects, I collaborated with or refined dialogues by another writer. Generally, I leaned heavily on the actors to guide the film’s language. In the case of Mickey 17, it was Rob I leaned on extensively. He has an exceptional and distinctive sense of language. With Mickey 18, much of the entertaining dialogue that he improvised wasn’t actually scripted initially.

In this project, I found it incredibly beneficial to collaborate with exceptional actors to navigate challenges posed by my non-native language proficiency. It was truly a team effort, especially since I had the support of an outstanding translator like her. Interestingly, she was part of the Mickey 17 set, always serving as a bridge between me and Rob Pattinson, and me and Mark Ruffalo. She’s not just a translator; she’s incredibly creative in her work.

Or, another option:

To excel in this production, I needed to rely on top-notch actors to help me overcome the language barrier I face as a non-native speaker. A fantastic translator like her was an integral part of the team, often mediating conversations between me and Rob Pattinson, as well as myself and Mark Ruffalo. She was even on set for Mickey 17! Her ability to creatively translate our dialogue truly made a difference.

The movie titled “Mickey 17” premiered in cinemas on March 7, 2025. It has been well-received by critics, with much praise for Robert Pattinson’s portrayal and his skill in playing multiple characters with distinct personalities. As of now, it boasts a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and it has amassed more than $16 million from a production budget of $118 million. Here is the movie’s official summary:

In the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton, Robert Pattinson plays a character known as an “expendable,” which is essentially a crew member on a space mission who can be replaced if they die, since their body can be renewed with most of their memories intact. However, following one regeneration, things take an unexpected turn for the worst.

What’s Next for the Korean Visionary Behind ‘Parasite’ and ‘Mickey 17’?

Mickey 17 marks Bong’s debut in a major studio production. Despite the movie being fresh and having a long road ahead to establish its success, Bong is already mapping out his subsequent live-action project. As of now, there’s no word on where he’ll be shooting it, but he generously revealed to Collider that he’s working on an animated film, with no specific details available yet.

Since 2019, I’ve been involved in the creation of an animation movie. Currently, over a hundred artists are contributing to this project, and our production pipeline is running smoothly. The story revolves around deep-sea creatures, which have some truly endearing protagonists. There are also human characters. This CGI animated film stands out due to its uniqueness. It’s currently in progress, with an expected release date sometime in 2027.
