It seems that Marvel Studios has taken notice of fan feedback regarding their recent lineup of MCU films, as evidenced by the unconventional promotional strategies for the upcoming Thunderbolts. In a recent conversation, actress Florence Pugh, returning to her extended character Yelena Belova, has added fuel to the unique marketing approach by labeling the next MCU film as an “action movie with a vibe similar to A24.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Pugh hinted at a unique flavor for the upcoming movie, “Thunderbolts,” stating it has a gritty, A24-esque assassin vibe combined with Marvel superheroes. For years, Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies have been criticized by fans for their similarities and lack of individuality, even drawing criticism from filmmaker Martin Scorsese. However, the full trailer for “Thunderbolts” has rekindled fans’ faith that the MCU can deliver genuine “cinematic experiences.
In a surprising twist, the fresh sneak peek for “Thunderbolts” has veered off in an entirely new direction. This intriguing teaser spotlights the extraordinary creative minds contributing to the film, such as director Jake Schreier from the popular Netflix show, cinematographer Andrew Droz Palermo known for “The Green Knight”, and the music group Son Lux, who have made their mark with “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. During an interview, Pugh spoke about Schreier’s previous work, appreciating his success on the hit Netflix series.
The tone has a subtle hint of beefy undertones, making it unique. It carries a poignant, resonating sadness that doesn’t overshadow the humor.”
“There’s a distinct ‘beefy’ quality to the tone which sets it apart. This tone is not only evocative but also manages to maintain a comedic aspect without sacrificing an emotional depth.
Florence Pugh Teases ‘Thunderbolts*’ Complicated New Villain
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it’s possible that The Thunderbolts may not be the top-tier team, but they represent Earth’s only hope against a sinister new adversary known as Sentry. This fresh villain, who has been cryptically called “Bob” in trailers, will be portrayed by Lewis Pullman and will serve as the MCU’s take on Superman, with some psychological issues added to the mix. According to Pugh, the group’s encounters with Bob in the film mirror what they may all secretly be experiencing.
Yelena recognizes certain aspects of herself in him. Being a nurturing person by nature, she feels a tender affection towards him. In essence, her inclination to care for him stems from the fact that he appears helpless and requires assistance. To put it bluntly, he seems completely incapable or ineffective.
Despite the efforts made to conceal it, Bob’s true identity seems to be an open secret in the MCU, with whispers spreading throughout its history. Trailers have hinted at Sentry’s powers, but we’re still waiting to witness the full scope of his extraordinary abilities. In the trailers, the only part of his costume that has been shown is his distinctive belt buckle. However, the complete appearance was accidentally unveiled through the film’s merchandise. The full Sentry costume was exposed when Marvel Studios presented the official Funko Pops for the movie.
The action-packed movie titled “Thunderbolts*” hits theaters on May 2. Joining Pugh in this film are Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. This is one of three new Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films set to premiere this year, following the release of “Captain America: Brave New World” in February which garnered mixed reactions from fans. Hopefully, “Thunderbolts*” and the upcoming “Fantastic Four: Brave New World” will help steer the MCU in a more positive direction before the release of “Avengers: Doomsday” next year.
