Hideo Kojima Hasn’t Moved On from Metal Gear, and It Shows

It appears that Hideo Kojima continues to hold onto his cherished Metal Gear Solid series, as shown by the recently released trailer for Death Stranding 2. This new game seems to carry over some of Kojima’s enduring passion for the tactical espionage genre, blending it with his latest work starring Norman Reedus and his peculiar, eccentric offspring.

One noticeable reference to Metal Gear in the trailer is the character, Neil, played by Luca Marinelli, who shares a resemblance with Solid Snake. In the game, this character is depicted as a smuggler, transporting brain-dead pregnant women from South America to the U.S., a detail that emerges in the extensive, Kojima-edited 10-minute trailer.

Following the display of the game’s latest weather effects, settings, and characters, the trailer unveils captivating fresh scenes featuring Luca in another role—a figure donning a bandana, commanding a group of armed individuals.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always been thrilled when game creators express admiration for actors. In my world, Hideo Kojima has been openly praising Luca Marinelli, stating that he’d be an ideal fit as Solid Snake in the future. Unbeknownst to us fans, it seems Kojima had already planned this, as he’s cast Marinelli in Death Stranding 2! To add to the excitement, Marinelli dons a bandana that mirrors the iconic look of the original Solid Snake, making me wonder what other surprises are in store for us.

Supporters of the initial Death Stranding game have swiftly noted similarities between Mads Mikkelsen’s character from the debut and Neil’s role in the sequel, sparking discussions regarding Neil’s potential importance in the follow-up game.

As a gamer, I can’t help but notice the similarities between Neil and Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid. Just speculating here, but it seems like Neil might be designed with stealth as a key gameplay aspect, given his role as a smuggler moving illicit goods across borders. It’s entirely possible that this is just a coincidence, but the parallels are pretty striking – especially when you consider the addition of a dedicated stealth section in Death Stranding Director’s Cut, complete with hiding spots like boxes to blend in with. If that’s not a wink to Metal Gear, I’m not sure what is!

In Death Stranding 2, Luca’s personality isn’t the sole nod to Metal Gear. Instead, you’ll encounter massive, robotic machines with a metallic sheen, a nostalgic nod to the legendary Metal Gear series. Moreover, Fragile and Sam’s vessel, DHV Magellan, metamorphoses into a gigantic Kaiju, piloted by Heartman. This transformation seems to suggest that it will not only serve as their means of transportation but also potentially carry them across South America.

I don’t know about you, but the DHV Magellan screams Metal Gear and Sahelanthropus to me.

It’s apparent that Hideo Kojima hasn’t completely left behind his iconic stealth series, and frankly, it makes sense since he finds inspiration in shaping his work. As a creative mastermind, he enjoys weaving nostalgia with innovative concepts. The development of Death Stranding 2 underscores this—an intriguing yet confounding reality for many fans.
