Millie Bobby Brown is speaking up against the criticism she’s faced regarding her shifting accent.
On the Smartless podcast, the actress from Stranger Things spoke about the feedback she’s encountered concerning her use of both British and American accents.
On the Smartless show, the lady from Stranger Things talked about the comments she gets for switching between a British and an American way of speaking.
She remarked, “For a brief while, that mattered significantly.” She referred to it as the ‘accent-controversy’, as it was incredibly aggravating because it received widespread attention. For a moment, it seemed like everyone was discussing my accent, and they had genuine issues with it. I found myself saying, “People, I’m married to an American.” (Fictional reference: Brown married Jake Bongiovi in May 2024.)
Or
She stated, “It made a big impact for a short time.” She called it the ‘accent-uproar’, as it was quite vexing because it gained widespread popularity. For a moment, it felt like everyone was commenting on my accent, and they had genuine concerns about it. I couldn’t help but think, “Folks, I’m married to an American.” (Fictional reference: Brown married Jake Bongiovi in May 2024.)
Since Bongiovi’s family communicates using American accents, Brown often adopts this speech pattern as she is constantly immersed in it. “Whenever I’m with his family, I unconsciously switch to an American accent,” she explained. “However, just recently I was in England, and the moment I heard my parents’ voices, I instantly reverted back.
She compared playing the alternating roles to acting out a character: “You ask me to perform these parts, yet you don’t want me to transform into different people. To me, what I hear is what I do. It’s all part of the act.
Brown has spoken about the critiques concerning her accent on previous occasions.
Last year, during an interview with well-known internet figure Max Balegde, Brown expressed sentiments that were quite alike: “I’m an artist, having spent my childhood under public scrutiny in America. When I arrive on set, I am an actor and I adjust, so I strive to imitate others!
After some online viewers noticed a shift in her speech during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Brown clarified that she finds herself unconsciously adopting an American accent when she’s around her fiancé or with people like Jimmy Fallon who have a strong American accent, making her want to mimic it!
Apart from mentioning that it’s unintentional, she added an apology if it might have caused any offense. However, she emphasized her efforts to do her best in the situation.
“She also made clear that she doesn’t mean to cause offense, and expressed regret if she did so. Nevertheless, she wanted you to know that she’s making every effort she can.
Brown has openly spoken out against critics who’ve commented on her appearance during the promotional tour of her latest film, The Electric State. She referred to these remarks as instances of bullying.
In a video posted on her social media that lasted approximately three minutes, Brown expressed, “I’ve grown up in full view of the world, yet it seems people struggle to mature alongside me. Instead, they expect me to remain unchanged, as if I should still appear as I did during the first season of ‘Stranger Things.’ Since I don’t meet these expectations, I’ve become a target.
She commented, “It’s disconcerting that grown writers are scrutinizing my appearance, my decisions, and yet some of these pieces are penned by women. It’s hypocritical; we often stress about empowering and motivating young females, but it appears tearing them down for views is more effortless.
