I Loved Watching Game Of Thrones’ George R.R. Martin Get Trolled Over Book Delays In Dark Winds Cameo, But Robert Redford Being The Troll Makes It Perfect

George R.R Martin is primarily recognized for his work on “Game of Thrones” and the ongoing “A Song of Ice and Fire” book series that served as the foundation for the fantasy drama, but he and Academy Award winner Robert Redford are also involved in the production of AMC’s “Dark Winds”. In the 2025 TV schedule, both took a moment to appear in the Season 3 premiere. This unexpected collaboration led to an amusing roast by Redford, teasing Martin about his prolonged intervals between books in the “ASOIAF” series.

In the opening scene of Season 3, Martin and Redford portray prisoners engaged in a game of chess. Suddenly, Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn, played by Zahn McClarnon from Echo, enters the room. Redford’s character then encourages Martin’s, “George, it seems the entire world is on edge. Let’s make our next move!

For fans who have been eagerly anticipating “The Winds of Winter,” Book 6 in “A Song of Ice and Fire,” over a decade now, that comment likely meant much more than just a casual chess joke between characters on AMC’s thriller series. However, according to “Dark Winds” showrunner Jon Wirth when he spoke with TV Insider, the writers are not responsible for the line. Wirth explained that it was not written by them.

It seems like those words were spoken by Mr. Redford himself, making them his own. Consequently, I unintentionally put him in an awkward situation, a fact that I find quite entertaining, and I believe George does as well.

In a witty twist, if any character from the series “Dark Winds” could tease George R.R Martin about the delay in his next “ASOIAF” book, it would undoubtedly be the iconic Robert Redford, wouldn’t it? As suggested by the showrunner’s remarks, the author seemed to take the improvised line in good humor, and here’s hoping this playful interaction won’t discourage him from future guest appearances. Kiowa Gordon, one of the cast members, pointed out that “It’s quite special of them to arrange it because George dislikes cameos, but he agreed for us” as he is a fan of the show and “I believe his affection for it carries significant weight.

Martin, who opted out, didn’t appear in any of the eight seasons of “Game of Thrones”. Instead, he decided to concentrate on penning “The Winds of Winter” during Season 8. The final season of “Game of Thrones” concluded with its controversial finale back in 2019, but as for “The Winds of Winter”, the chilling winds are yet to grace bookshelves.

He’s been excitedly talking up the upcoming HBO series set in Westeros, expressing great satisfaction with “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”, which is scheduled for release later this year. (In time, Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will all be streamable with a Max subscription.)
