Erasing Saves in Modern Pokémon Games Should Be Easier

From my perspective, I believe Pokémon games on the Nintendo Switch receive more criticism than they deserve, given that they offer a solid role-playing game (RPG) experience when compared to others in the wider context.

Undeniably, the games produced by this large-scale company have high expectations due to their financial backing. However, titles such as Scarlet and Violet demonstrate excellent gameplay, so fingers crossed that Legends Z-A also delivers in the same manner.

It’d be wonderful if Game Freak and The Pokémon Company could simplify the process of deleting saves, just like they did in earlier versions.

Back in the good old days when I was gaming on the Nintendo Game Boy, let me tell you, managing save files wasn’t as complicated as it is now with the 3DS. If I didn’t fancy my party setup or the starter I chose, all I had to do was navigate to the main menu and opt for a fresh start by selecting ‘New Game’. A heads up would pop up, informing me that an old save file existed, and I could either choose to wipe it clean or let it be. It was as simple as that!

If players aren’t satisfied with their Pokémon squad, they currently have two options: repeatedly press several buttons on the 3DS system or navigate to the save data storage on the Nintendo Switch. It seems illogical and inconvenient for gamers to go through such a process just to delete their saved games, especially when most contemporary games offer the ability to erase save data or begin anew with minimal fuss.

In Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, some critics pointed out that they only allowed one save file, yet players could always opt to begin anew if desired.

It’s hard to believe that these games lack the option for multiple save files, but thankfully, players can simply start a new game if needed. It’s amazing that Game Freak’s series hasn’t incorporated this feature despite its long history, and it seems unbelievable that they’ve managed to get away with it.

As a devoted fan, I get why contemporary Pokémon games require us to maintain just one save file. It’s all about cultivating discipline among gamers and encouraging patience when it comes to managing our party of critters. Over time, this strategy helps us find the perfect team to see us through the game’s final challenges. Even top-tier players stick to a single save file for training their Pokémon, though that might not always be the case in future competitions like Pokémon Champions.

Nonetheless, players worldwide are hoping that the developers will provide an option to delete game saves effortlessly once Pokémon Legends: Z-A arrives on Nintendo Switch later in the year. Regrettably, it seems unlikely as Game Freak and The Pokémon Company tend to stick to their established methods. It’s unfortunate that Nintendo has been somewhat disappointing with some of its exclusive games, which only allow one save file. At present, players must make do with this situation.

Come on, Nintendo, give us back control over our save files.
