Scarlett Johansson, who famously played Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is asking fans to accept that her character’s story has come to an end. Johansson debuted as Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) in Iron Man 2 and became a central figure in the MCU, joining the Avengers during their first assembly in The Avengers. Tragically, Romanoff made the ultimate sacrifice for the Soul Stone in Avengers: Endgame and returned once more only for the prequel film, Black Widow. However, speculation among fans persists that Johansson will reprise her role in upcoming films like Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, a scenario which she hopes to dispel.
Natasha (Black Widow) is no longer alive,” Johansson confirmed to InStyle Magazine when queried about rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s important to note that statements from past Marvel actors suggesting they won’t return can sometimes be unreliable, particularly after Andrew Garfield’s deception regarding his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Robert Downey Jr.’s return to play another character in Avengers: Doomsday has sparked speculation that Johansson’s statement could hold some truth. She further added:
“She has passed away, and there’s no denying it. People are hoping for her return, but I believe that her influence on the universe is too profound to be forgotten. It’s time to accept this reality.
As a movie enthusiast, I can say that my reluctance to see Natasha Romanoff back in the MCU isn’t about personal feelings, but rather from a storytelling perspective. The emotional impact of Black Widow’s sacrifice in Endgame was profound and powerful, and reintroducing her through some magical means would diminish the weight of that scene and undermine Natasha’s selfless act. In essence, she gave everything to save the world; let her have her heroic moment and rest in the glory of her sacrifice.
Black Widow Doesn’t Need To Return to the MCU
As the release of Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars approaches, producers are reaching out to actors who have worked with Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in the past, to see if they will reprise their roles for the upcoming film. Characters such as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange still have stories left to tell within the MCU. However, for characters that have been deceased for 10 or more movies, it may be time to accept and move on from them. Bringing back dead characters can lessen the impact of their deaths, which has often been a point of criticism among MCU fans regarding the current Multiverse storyline. It leaves some feeling as though there are no lasting consequences, since events happened differently in another timeline.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been keeping an eye on Scarlett Johansson’s career ever since her breakout roles. Even before she donned the Black Widow suit, Johansson was already making waves in Hollywood. However, with her tenure as Black Widow concluded, she’s expanded her repertoire significantly. From the Transformers universe to the quirky world of Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, Johansson has been quite the busy bee.
Next up, you can catch Johansson in a thrilling new adventure – Gareth Edwards’ Jurassic World: Rebirth. This dinosaur-filled epic will see Johansson teaming up with Mahershala Ali, Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, and Ed Skrein. Mark your calendars for July 2, 2025, as we all head back to the Jurassic Park for this exciting return!
