In a surprising turn of events, the creator of “28 Days Later,” Alex Garland, has dared to compare his own movie with the hit HBO series “The Last of Us.” Rather than keeping them separate, he’s openly declared that the TV adaptation surpasses his work in quality. As both intellectual properties prepare for their next instalments – “28 Years Later” set for June 20th release and “The Last of Us” Season 2 premiering on HBO on April 13.
During a conversation with Neil Druckmann, the creator of The Last of Us video game, Garland spoke about the resemblances and contrasts between both zombie series. Regarding the highly acclaimed zombie film 28 Days Later, Garland acknowledged that The Last of Us surpasses his own movie in quality. “Let me make this clear: The Last of Us is superior to 28 Days [Later],” he stated. Garland wasn’t evaluating the entire films against each other, but he did admit that the writing in The Last of Us is more effective than his work on 28 Days Later from 2002. He further added:
28 Days Later and The Last of Us are two different experiences in the genre of post-apocalyptic storytelling. While both have their merits, The Last of Us stands out for me in terms of its depth and emotional impact. It’s more sophisticated and moving, a level above 28 Days Later, if I may say so. However, I hold 28 Days Later close to my heart as it played a significant role in shaping my appreciation for this genre. Therefore, while The Last of Us has indeed influenced me, it’s important to acknowledge the value and place of 28 Days Later in my personal journey with cinema.
It should come as no surprise that the admiration flowed reciprocally, for Druckmann acknowledged that 28 Days Later played a significant role in shaping The Last of Us. “There’s a clear connection between the swift infected in The Last of Us and those in 28 Days Later,” Druckmann stated. Moreover, the film catapulted Cillian Murphy to fame and ushered in the terrifying concept of rage zombies that chased people relentlessly. This idea has since become a common trope within the genre, being prominently featured in The Last of Us.
’28 Years Later’ Releases This June in Theaters
It’s not exactly 28 years, but it’s been quite some time since fans have enjoyed a fresh installment in the “28 [Time Span] Later” series. In this new installment, Alex Garland and Danny Boyle are back to revive the franchise with an entirely new ensemble cast. Leading roles are taken by Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in “28 Years Later”, which unveiled its spine-chilling first trailer in December last year. Furthermore, the upcoming film is intended to initiate a new trilogy, with “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” directed by “The Marvels'” Nia DaCosta scheduled for release in theaters early next year.
Speaking about “The Last of Us“, it’s preparing for its second season now. The first season covered the entirety of the initial video game. On the other hand, Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin are meticulously working on “The Last of Us: Part II”, which has been divided into two seasons due to its extensive length.
