On October 7, 2023, a massacre of Jews occurred that was one of the largest since the Holocaust, involving 251 hostages taken by Hamas. However, Wendy Sachs’ documentary doesn’t focus on this tragic incident itself, but rather on the aftermath, specifically the surge in antisemitism that emerged. This was evident in protests on college campuses, public demonstrations, and social media. For those who are concerned about this escalating issue – and everyone should be – October 8 is a must-watch.
It’s undeniably valid to argue against Israel’s prolonged mistreatment of Palestinians and question both the moral and legal aspects of its military actions in Gaza. However, it was alarming to see anti-Israel sentiments intensify drastically following the tragic event, and how quickly they transformed into antisemitism. College campuses nationwide saw protests ignite, with Jewish students experiencing verbal abuse and even physical violence. Many student groups at universities issued statements placing blame for Hamas’ actions on Israel, and some faculty members joined in the chorus of criticism. A Cornell University professor took this a step further by describing the Hamas attack as “exciting” and “invigorating.
The movie features recordings of numerous college leaders testifying before Congress, struggling to justify their inadequate protection measures against harassment targeted at Jewish students, as well as questioning if expressions advocating Jewish genocide contravened their ethical guidelines.
As a gamer pondering, I wonder what’s the implication when the future leaders of the world’s foremost democracy are calling for revolution and intifada, as noted by journalist Bari Weiss about the students. A decade from now, I can’t help but question, what shape will our nation take?
As a passionate supporter of Israel, I’ve found myself among university students who bravely stand against anti-Israel hatred. One such individual is the student body president at University of California, Santa Barbara, who publicly expressed his support for Israel. His stand earned him a torrent of hateful messages and threats.
On October 8th, I find myself compelled to delve into the factors fueling the escalating hatred and express my disapproval towards the insufficient counteraction against it. My attention is drawn to the Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a group known for its contentious nature with an approximate 200 chapters scattered nationwide.
A different challenge arises due to the fact that many younger individuals primarily obtain their news through social media platforms like TikTok. This opens up opportunities for malicious entities such as Iran, North Korea, China, and Russia to spread misinformation with relative ease.
The movie additionally criticizes the minimal public criticism from celebrities and political leaders regarding Hamas’s hostage-taking incident, contrasting it with the strong reactions following the kidnapping of Nigerian school girls by Boko Haram. Notably absent are many Hollywood figures, although exceptions exist in notable figures like Debra Messing (a producer on this film) and Michael Rapaport, both significant contributors to the documentary.
Messing expresses deep disappointment with Hollywood due to a perceived lack of support, while Rapaport offers a more blunt and straightforward critique. He admits his understanding of his position in the industry, stating, ‘It’s really disheartening that I, being one of the few big names in Hollywood apart from Debra Messing, wasn’t given more recognition.’
Notable individuals such as Congressman Ritchie Torres (known for his strong advocacy for Israel), Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Scott Galloway, Douglas Murray, Sheryl Sandberg, historian Deborah Lipstadt, and Mosab Yousef, the son of a Hamas co-founder and former Palestinian militant who now openly criticizes Hamas and pro-Palestinian movements, are among those expressing intense worry over the increasing antisemitism.
Similar to numerous advocacy films, October 8 selectively presents certain facts and raises debatable inferences. However, it’s undeniable that the film’s message is significant and demands attention from political figures, academia, religious institutions, and civic leaders, who should consider taking corrective action.
