Martin Starr is generating anticipation for the 20th Century Studios’ forthcoming remake of “The Hand that Rocks the Cradle.” The actor, who joined the movie’s cast in early December, recently disclosed that we are getting closer to witnessing the Mary Elizabeth Winstead-led remake. In a recent interview, while discussing his short film “Out for Delivery,” Starr informed Collider that filming for the new version of “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle” has been completed, mentioning that shooting took place in December and January.
This film is a remake by an exceptionally gifted Mexican director named Michelle Garza [Cervera]. While I can’t reveal too many details, I must say I’m thrilled about it. The entire production and the overall experience have been truly remarkable. She’s nothing short of amazing.
In this new take on Curtis Hanson’s 1992 movie, the principal roles were played by Rebecca De Mornay, Annabella Sciorra, Matt McCoy, Ernie Hudson, and Julianne Moore. The film is now being helmed by Michelle Garza Cervera (known for “Huesera: The Bone Woman”), with a screenplay penned by Micah Bloomberg, author of “Sanctuary”.
Hanson’s psychological thriller revolves around Mrs. Mott (De Mornay), who, after her husband was exposed as a sexual abuser and caused immense sorrow, embarks on a mission for vengeance. She secretly infiltrates the family of the woman (Annabella Sciorra) who made the initial accusations undercover as a nanny. Her objective is to punish this woman and seize her children and husband. Although reviews were mixed, De Mornay’s acting left an indelible mark, and the movie was commercially successful.
Michelle Garza Cervera’s Remake Promises Nuanced Modern Horror
In this new version of the tale, Monroe takes on the role of the transformed nanny, while Winstead embodies the family’s strong leader. Raúl Castillo, known for his work in ‘Push’, will portray her husband. Starr is slated to make an appearance as the neighboring family member.
Starr expressed that the entire team is excellent, and she eagerly anticipates watching the edited version since she believes it will be a very entertaining production.
The upcoming film focuses on a woman who pursues retribution against her husband’s victim after he is jailed and commits suicide, leading to a dark chain of violence towards her family. In light of current discussions about women’s rights, sexual misconduct, office relationships, and digital privacy, Cervera’s perspective on the ’90s thriller genre promises to bring new dimensions and complexity.
Starr points out that Cervera is exceptionally skilled, and her participation promises an exhilarating experience for horror enthusiasts. In the acclaimed “Huesera: The Bone Woman,” Cervera masterfully crafted an eerie ambiance that harmoniously resonates with the themes of control and vengeance as depicted in “The Hand that Rocks the Cradle.” Moreover, “Huesera: The Bone Woman” delves into the challenges faced by women, hinting at Cervera’s ability to bring a contemporary, rich, and multidimensional perspective to Monroe’s character. Additionally, we eagerly anticipate seeing Monroe, renowned for her work in horror classics like “It Follows,” “Watcher,” and “Longlegs,” portraying the film’s antagonist.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve had the privilege of previewing an upcoming production that’s currently in the post-production phase. This fascinating project is brought to us by 20th Century Studios, Radar Pictures, led by Ted Field, and Department M, under the watchful eyes of Michael Schaefer and Mike Larocca. The film is now being meticulously edited by none other than the talented director, Cervera, but as of yet, we don’t have a confirmed release date to share with you eager cinemagoers. Stay tuned for more updates!
