Will ‘The Bride!’ Become a Box Office Nightmare After Disappointing Test Screenings?

The direction of universal horror cinema has experienced an unusual shift over the past decade. Following the failure of Tom Cruise’s ‘The Mummy’, which disintegrated like a vampire in sunlight (as portrayed in different movies), the concept of a unified monster universe was swiftly abandoned and replaced by something more engaging for viewers. Films that reimagine classic night creatures in fresh environments, such as ‘The Invisible Man’, ‘Abigail’, and ‘Renfield’ starring Nicolas Cage, have found success. The upcoming movie, ‘Maggie Gyllenhaal’s untitled project’, is next on the list, but early responses suggest it may not be promising for its box office prospects.

Similar to other recent productions, “The Bride!” is currently facing intense competition from an upcoming movie with a similar narrative theme. This year also sees Guillermo del Toro’s interpretation of the classic Frankenstein story, where he will bring his unique gothic-fantasy style to the monster in his own film. Even without this competition, there are concerns that Gyllenhaal’s version of the Universal Monsters property could be a financially risky endeavor, despite its impressive cast.

The Bride!” is set in 1930s Chicago, featuring Frankenstein’s monster on a quest for a companion. He turns to scientist Dr. Euphronius for help, reviving a deceased woman with grim results. The star-studded cast includes Jessie Buckley, Christian Bale, Jake Gyllenhaal, Penélope Cruz, Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, and Annette Bening. This seems like an ideal collaboration. However, as Puck points out, concerns have arisen that the film’s art-house aesthetic might not resonate or appeal enough to a horror audience to recoup its budget, given audience reactions from test screenings.

The report stated that one of the film’s production companies considered it inappropriate for Gyllenhaal to receive over $15 million to produce the movie, given its budget was approximately $100 million. In other words, if the movie doesn’t earn more than $200 million, it will be considered a flop. Given that most conventional horror films have difficulty exceeding the $100 million mark, The Bride is expected to face significant challenges.

Could ‘The Bride!’ Resurrect Itself to Avoid Being a Box Office Disaster?

Forecasting a movie’s success at the box office used to be quite predictable. Big-budget hits ruled the market, low-cost movies barely made their small investments back, and superhero films were always money-spinners. However, these days, it’s becoming more complex.

Following the Covid pandemic, cinemas have faced difficulties maintaining audience interest consistently. Major DC and Marvel films have failed to captivate viewers, as many anticipate watching these movies at home on streaming platforms within a few months. On the other hand, shock-horror and heavy drama genres have thrived in theaters unexpectedly. “The Bride!” might become another surprise success, given its star-studded cast. The main challenge lies with its high production budget. If the film had kept costs below $50 million, it would likely have ensured a financially successful debut. Now, it may need to generate substantial revenue itself just to cover its expenses.
