Daredevil: Born Again continues to honor the series that came before

Warning — this post contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Episode 3.

In plain terms, the current episodes of “Daredevil: Born Again” may not diminish the unforgettable greatness of the initial Marvel Netflix series featuring Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock. However, it’s essential to acknowledge this truth at the outset. Fortunately, “Born Again” doesn’t appear to be attempting to replicate that magic. Instead, it seems more like a successful revival of a TV show. It manages to pay homage to the past while also striving for something fresh and innovative.

In Episode 3, we witness Murdock delving back into lawyering – yet it’s unclear whether he’s operating at peak performance. His grief over Foggy and his decision to retire from being Daredevil are evident, reflecting the Matt we once knew. This struggle with morality and finding his place within the intricate web of criminal justice suggests that he may not belong there or that he’s unsure about it.

In the episode’s conclusion, Ayala suffers a harsh fate, which some might say is due to Murdock’s blunder. This choice to reveal a vigilante in such a careless manner seems out of character for Daredevil. However, I contend that this very action showcases the change in Murdock – he no longer sees himself as a vigilante. Instead, he has strayed from his path, consumed by grief. It was an unwise decision, and perhaps soon he will acknowledge that fact. As for the sound effects during the credits, they were quite unsettling.

It’s not surprising that Murdock finds himself ensnared in his personal struggles again. His journey isn’t about regressing; rather, it’s a sign of ongoing character development. Foggy, however, was always his guiding force. Initially, I assumed Foggy’s death was merely a plot device for Marvel to wrap up old storylines and introduce new characters. But as the series unfolds, it seems that this loss will shape who Murdock ultimately becomes – whether he embraces his destiny or continues to evade it.

It’s quite nice not seeing Matt Murdock as Daredevil since Episode 1, a change that might seem odd but is actually fitting. In truth, beneath his surface, Matt is aware that he can’t evade the vigilante lifestyle indefinitely. The longer he avoids it, the higher the price he’ll have to pay down the line, and perhaps even sooner than we anticipate.

New episodes of Daredevil: Born again drop Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET on Disney+.
