In simpler terms, the movie “Superbad” is a comedy that lives up to its R rating due to the naughty antics of characters played by Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. However, even in an R-rated film, there are limits to what can be shown, some of which are just basic common sense. Additionally, there may be unexpected reasons for excluding certain elements, such as when Seth Rogen, one of the writers of “Superbad,” received a surprising and offensive note from Sony Pictures regarding Hill’s character.
During an interview with Rotten Tomatoes at SXSW, where his latest Apple TV+ series “The Studio” debuted, Rogen reminisced about a memorable direction he received while working on “Superbad“. Specifically, Sony prohibited the character Seth from using a PlayStation because of his despicable nature. When recalling this, Rogen said:
In the film “Superbad”, it was shared that Sony produced the movie at a time when Jonah Hill’s character, Seth, was considered unacceptable to the studio due to his behavior. There’s even a scene where they play video games, and the studio said, ‘Jonah can’t use a PlayStation.’ [laughs] They stated that they couldn’t have him interact with their products through his character because it was too inappropriate for the character portrayed. When I heard this, I felt somewhat offended as it was based on me, but we eventually complied with their wishes.

Just as Rogen pointed out, Superbad is based on their own teenage experiences, so it’s understandable that he might take offense. Interestingly, the makers of the PlayStation seem to have deemed Jonah Hill’s character Seth unacceptable for playing their console in the film. This seems reminiscent of the rumored rule at Apple, where villains in movies and TV shows are not allowed to be seen using iPhones.
Despite finding it challenging, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg didn’t resist. In contrast, the character Michael Cera portraying Evan was seen engrossed in a game on the PlayStation. Meanwhile, Seth’s character was rummaging through Evan’s wardrobe for something suitable to wear for the evening event. Take a look:
To put it simply, the PlayStation restriction by Sony may appear excessive, but they are legally entitled to do so. Regardless, this revelation doesn’t diminish the quality of the movie _Superbad_, which was once proclaimed as the funniest film ever made, though I might not go that far given some aspects of _Superbad_ have lost their charm since its 2007 release. However, it significantly contributed to the fame of Jonah Hill, Michael Cera, and Emma Stone in Hollywood, maintaining its appeal despite certain elements no longer being as fresh today.
At the moment, you can stream the movie “Superbad” on fuboTV, a service that can be added to your Hulu plan. If you’re eager to watch more of Seth Rogen’s projects from “The Studio”, it will become available for Apple TV+ subscribers on March 26.
