The Russo Brothers Reveal Which Comics Will Inspire Avengers: Doomsday And Secret Wars, And I’m Cautiously Optimistic

As the premiere date for “Avengers: Doomsday” approaches, we’ve been given glimpses and hints about the plot, but for the most part, the Doctor Doom-focused storyline remains shrouded in mystery due to efforts to prevent spoilers and leaks. This leaves fans of comic books unsure of what lies ahead, but directors Joe and Anthony Russo have hinted at some sources of inspiration, which gives me a cautious sense of optimism.

Lately, the Russo Brothers have been providing insights into their creative approach for the films “Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars“. They’ve previously mentioned that creating Doctor Doom is an incredibly intense process, and they have a bold vision for these two movies. Regarding the inspiration for these projects, they revealed to TechRadar that they are combining elements from the 1980s and 2010s comic book series titled “Secret Wars“. When asked about how closely the movie will adhere to the comics, Joe Russo commented:

We often develop our own take on the story based on comics, but since I was a fan of the initial series, it was Marvel comic books that initially captivated me. The Hickman series is equally impressive and distinct from the original in many aspects, so we’ll draw inspiration from both versions.

If you’ve just skimmed through these comic book series and aren’t familiar with their narratives, let me briefly summarize the 1980s “Secret Wars” by Jim Shooter. This epic tale revolves around an enigmatic cosmic being known as The Beyonder. The Beyonder is on a quest to discover the ultimate powerful character among all and challenges them to fight in a far-off galaxy called Battleworld.

The 2010 “Secret Wars” comic book series by Jonathan Hickman showcases the demise of the Marvel multiverse. This catastrophic event leads to a collision of multiple universes, resulting in their mutual destruction. The remaining fragments from these realities are sewn together to create a realm known as Battleworld, which is governed by a version of Doctor Doom. Given this basic understanding, it’s likely that elements from both “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” will be blended in future narratives.

Instead of saying “The MCU’s Multiverse Saga, unlike its predecessor, The Infinity Saga, has had some difficulties in striking a chord with the audience,” you could rephrase it as “The Multiverse Saga in the MCU has faced challenges in connecting with viewers, contrasting its predecessor, the Infinity Saga.”

Regarding the upcoming projects like “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” there has been apprehension since Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Doctor Doom was announced. This uncertainty stems from concerns about how these stories will unfold following the change in plans, with Doctor Doom taking over the role initially intended for Kang, who was teased as a new Thanos-level threat in “Loki” Season 1 and the end-credits scene of “Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania.” However, this shift occurred due to Jonathan Majors’ departure from Marvel Studios because of legal issues, a fact that Majors himself has acknowledged.

Instead of just swapping characters, this drastic reimagining of the storyline has us and fellow fans feeling uneasy about its potential success. However, I can’t help but stay hopeful due to the promise shown by the captivating narratives that the Russo Brothers are drawing inspiration from. As a writer myself, I will keep faith in the creative process until more details emerge.

There’s been talk about why Doctor Doom might be the primary villain, but it remains to be seen if those rumors are indeed accurate. Given that The Fantastic Four: First Steps is slated for release in 2025 and Doctor Doom is their longstanding adversary, there’s hope that we might catch a glimpse of a teaser for his role in Doomsday within that film. Time will reveal the truth.
