Daniel Craig’s Surprising Role in Greta Gerwig’s Narnia Movie Revealed!

Excitedly, as a devoted fan, I can’t help but share the buzz surrounding Greta Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation of C.S. Lewis’ “Narnia,” set to stream on Netflix in 2026! With filming rumored to start this summer, speculation about casting choices is already swirling. Last week, Charli XCX was linked to the role of The White Witch, and now Daniel Craig has joined the list. Interestingly, though, it’s not the role I anticipated for him.

Daniel Craig Is Reportedly In Talks For Narnia, But As An Unexpected Character

According to Deadline’s Wednesday afternoon report, it appears that the previous James Bond actor has received an offer to play a part in the Narnia movie. Although the specific character he might be up for hasn’t been mentioned in the original report, What’s On Netflix speculates that he is being looked at for the role of Uncle Andrew, also known as Andrew Ketterly.

If you can’t recall the character from previous Narnia movies, it’s likely because they didn’t appear in any of them. The film series by Walt Disney Pictures began with the first book, but director Greta Gerwig is said to be moving directly to the sixth book, “The Magician’s Nephew”. Published in 1955 after the initial five books, this novel functions as a prequel to all the other books that came before it. In fact, if you had the series of books as a child like I did, it would have been labeled as the first book.

Indeed, I’d be excited to share my thoughts on the intriguing character of Uncle Andrew in the story, as portrayed by Daniel Craig. This enigmatic figure is said to serve as the main antagonist, with a backstory that’s as captivating as it is mysterious. He fashions himself as a magician, yet stumbles upon real magic when his godmother gifts him a magical box on her deathbed, instructing him to destroy it. However, instead of following her wishes, he retains the box and uses its powers for various experiments, unwittingly paving the way for human discovery of Narnia.

If you remember, in The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, Uncle Andrew would have been an elderly man or already deceased by the time the Pevensie siblings stumbled upon Narnia through the wardrobe. This is a fascinating twist on the original tale!

I Would Have Thought Daniel Craig Would Play Narnia’s Aslan

Reading about the rumored projects of Greta Gerwig regarding the Narnia films has sparked my curiosity, but left me perplexed about her approach to the story given the book she’s starting with. Frankly, I would have expected Daniel Craig for the role of Aslan, the lion king of Narnia, due to his powerful voice, but Gerwig seems to be envisioning something quite different for her interpretation compared to previous adaptations. In any case, I am confident in Greta Gerwig’s abilities, particularly after her exceptional work on one character from Little Women.

Daniel Craig’s collaboration with Netflix is undoubtedly continuing, as his third film in the Knives Out series, Wake Up Dead Man, is scheduled for release this fall. It’s been quite a while since I last read the Chronicles of Narnia, but the idea of Daniel Craig portraying a villain is tantalizing! We’re all waiting to hear if Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan have landed roles following their reported missed opportunities for the Barbie movie.
