The hit comedy on Apple TV+, titled “Shrinking“, has welcomed another esteemed actor to its already impressive cast roster. Known for his Golden Globe nominations and two Emmy awards, the talented Jeff Daniels returns to comedy by accepting a recurring role in the upcoming third season of this popular series, currently under production.
Daniels is set to join forces with Jason Segel, along with supporting characters Jessica Williams, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell, and Ted McGinley. The highly acclaimed comedy revolves around the character of Jimmy, portrayed by Segel, who’s grappling with the loss of his wife. Struggling to bond with his daughter (played by Lukita Maxwell), Jimmy decides to shake things up in his life. As a result, he adopts an unconventional approach to therapy, which ultimately impacts the lives of those around him, including his coworkers Gaby and Paul (portrayed by Williams and Ford respectively).
Jeff Daniels is mainly known for his roles in films such as Dumb and Dumber, Speed, The Martian, among others, along with television series like The Newsroom, The Comey Rule, and Godless. After focusing on more serious roles over the past decade, Daniels will be showcasing his comedy skills once again, making his live-action sitcom debut in Shrinking, where he plays Jimmy’s father, who has yet to receive a name. Shrinking, which has already completed two seasons, is highly praised, with a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes for Season 1 and an impressive 97% for Season 2. The series has received numerous nominations at the Golden Globes and the Emmys and is one of Apple TV+’s most popular shows, currently ranking sixth in their top TV programs.
‘Shrinking’ Perfectly Balances Comedy & Drama
Starting from 2020, Apple TV+ has tasted success in comedy with shows like Ted Lasso. Created by Bill Lawrence, Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt, and Joe Kelly, this sports comedy was a critical and audience favorite, winning numerous awards and earning the love of countless Apple TV+ subscribers. With its success, the executives at Apple TV+ began searching for their next hit sitcom. The solution came from Bill Lawrence once more, who collaborated with Brett Goldstein, a writer and actor on Ted Lasso, and brought in Jason Segel, famous for his comedic roles in How I Met Your Mother and Freaks and Geeks. In this journey, I found myself joining their team, contributing to the creation of Apple TV+’s next potential sitcom sensation.
The outcome was “Shrinking,” a delightful comedy series that skillfully struck the right chord between humor and drama, ensuring viewers remained captivated. Despite its central plot being deeply emotional and tragic, it masterfully blends these elements with humor. Moreover, it doesn’t shy away from tackling mature themes in an unapologetic and edgy manner. Unlike conventional sitcoms, “Shrinking” is not only compelling in its dramatic aspects but also manages to elicit plenty of chuckles.
Given Harrison Ford‘s character Paul has served as a paternal figure to Jason Segel’s Jimmy since the series began, we can’t help but see Daniels’ casting in the show as a hidden advantage. It’s clear that there will be conflicts, but fans of the show understand that without these challenges, these therapists would find themselves out of work.
