In Monster Hunter Wilds, the layered armor system serves as a customization option, combining elements of transformation (transmog) and adjustment (modification). This term can be understood as the ability for players to alter the visual look of their character’s armor pieces without affecting its stats, essentially offering costumes as an alternative appearance.
As a dedicated Monster Hunter World enthusiast, I find immense satisfaction in tailoring my armor sets based on my preferred gameplay style. Yet, there’s an added thrill in donning distinctive costumes that make my character stand out. Should I choose, I can opt to forgo these cosmetic enhancements and let my raw power speak for itself.
Learn how to unlock and craft layered armor by following this guide!
How to Unlock Layered Armor
If you’ve been playing Monster Hunter Wilds persistently, it won’t take much time before you can unlock and craft layered armor. All you need is to advance to High Rank, at which point you’ll be able to customize your appearance (transmog). You can achieve this by completing the main story quest up until Chapter 4 and other tasks available to you.
Besides creating armor the old-fashioned way, there’s also an option to purchase various Layered Armor DLCs from the store. These include accessories like the Fencer’s Eye Patch, Oni Horns Wig, and the full Feudal Soldier ensemble.
If you’ve pre-ordered the game on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC, you were likely granted a special gift – the Guild Knight Layered Armor Set and Talisman Hope Charm. Don’t forget to put on this set if you fancy yourself as a stylish knight!
How to Craft Layered Armor
To begin creating your multi-layered protective gear, make sure to seek out Gemma, who specializes in weapon and armor crafting or enhancement. You can find her at any of the main camps following our initial encounter with her.
Converse with Gemma by saying, “I’d prefer to handle my gear and opt for ‘Armor Customization’ followed by ‘Refine/Improve Armor’. This will lead you to the armor selection screen where you can explore different options. You’ll get a sneak peek as there’s a preview available. Please remember that not every armor piece can be transformed into layered armor. Regrettably, Low-Rank armors cannot be worn in a layered fashion.

You are free to create any of the High-Tier armors displayed in this menu, provided you have the required crafting materials at your disposal. If there’s a Low-Tier armor that catches your eye, you can search through the High-Tier options and find one with a similar appearance.
As a dedicated fan, I can tell you that sometimes, when you’re short on necessary materials for the Nu Udra set, it means embarking on quests to find those specific items. It might require some determination and patience, as acquiring materials like the Nu Udra Hide+, Oilmucus+, Flamegem, and Certificate S won’t always be easy or immediate. But the joy of completing the set makes every hunt worthwhile!
After creating the costume armor that suits you, be sure to refer to our guide on how to properly don layered armor for the best results.
