From my perspective as a passionate fan, The Thing, as portrayed in both films and comics, is more than just a powerfully built character. He’s equipped with an array of formidable skills that make him an immediate menace in any battlefield scenario. As a Vanguard, he’s fundamentally robust, boasting a substantial health reserve. Typically, you’ll find him leading the charge, leveraging his sustainable and endurance-enhanced abilities to their fullest potential.
Because of his high resistance to damage and ability to control crowds, there are fewer options available for countering him effectively. However, it’s important to note that he can still be defeated. In the following sections, we’ll explore some characters who are particularly effective against The Thing. Keep reading to find out more.
Countering The Thing
As a devotee of The Vanguard, I can attest to the colossal tension I inflict upon my adversaries. With an unparalleled health reserve at my disposal, I am a beacon of resilience on the battlefield.
Beyond just being durable, he possesses unique qualities that set him apart as a key player in Marvel Rivals. Here, let’s explore some characteristics gamers should be aware of before diving into the challenge of mastering the formidable Vanguard.
Initially, a trait called Tough Hide grants the character reduced damage from opponents, enhancing their survivability in battle. Furthermore, Unyielding Rush makes The Thing immune to enemy crowd-control effects, enabling him to charge relentlessly through adversaries with ease.
In terms of attack, Clobberin’ Time gives him an outlet for his aggression, causing chaos and destruction in the battlefield.
How to Counter The Thing
From my perspective as an avid gamer, The Thing’s diverse skillset not only empowers him to fend off assaults from adversaries but also streamlines his ability to thwart crowd-control maneuvers. Consequently, characters who can keep their distance or intelligently employ crowd-control tactics can effectively counteract The Thing. In the subsequent sections, we’ll delve into a few of these strategies.
Peni Parker (Vanguard)
Because Peni’s vitality level resembles The Thing’s, you’ve essentially prepared for one key battle element. By maximizing her skills, you’ll be able to put up a formidable resistance against your opponents.
Initially, The Thing, similar to Peni Parker, possesses a variety of detachable tools that serve either to harm opponents or impede their advance—let’s consider how he can leverage these devices. For example, one of his gadgets includes explosive traps, which can be placed tactically across the map. When The Thing steps on them, they detonate, causing a substantial decrease in his health points.

To prevent the enemy from attacking you head-on impulsively, it’s wise to strategically position these mines at critical locations. This tactic could potentially increase the harm he sustains.
One additional skill Peni Parker possesses is the Web Snare, which she uses to pin down her adversaries. In this scenario, however, she could use it to immobilize The Thing’s support system. Given that he’s largely resistant to crowd control effects, disabling his backup allows your teammates to concentrate their attacks on The Thing directly, causing substantial damage to his health meter.
Groot (Vanguard)
Similar to Peni Parker, Groot serves as a Vanguard too, ensuring your health disparity is addressed. Unlike her, however, Groot’s isolation abilities set him apart. By constructing wooden barriers, he can segregate The Thing from his allies – healers, duelists, and buffy Vanguards. This separation opens up an opportunity for your team to concentrate their attacks on the isolated, powerful Vanguard, Groot.
Regarding offensive abilities, Groot isn’t just capable of inflicting damage from a distance but also engaging in close combat. He primarily uses his Vine Strike and Spore Bomb for ranged attacks, while his melee attacks are typically performed with Furious Flora.
The Punisher (Duelist)
As a devoted fan, I’ve found an interesting twist in combat strategies: although I’m typically a Duelist, The Punisher proves a formidable ally against The Thing. His diverse weaponry, capable of dishing out hefty damage from afar or up close, makes him a swift equalizer when it comes to health disparities between us and our adversaries.

In combat situations, the character switches to his ranged weapon, called Adjudication (Assault Rifle), for long-distance attacks. When it comes to close encounters, he relies on his Shotgun, Deliverance. Both weapons are effective in dealing damage per second (DPS). Additionally, he can set up a Culling Turret, which targets nearby enemies, providing supportive fire.
When he’s cornered and can’t retaliate or avoid damage, The Punisher can employ his Grapple Gun for an escape route. Furthermore, he can leverage this skill to move to advantageous spots across the map.
Winter Soldier (Duelist)
The Winter Soldier, much like the Punisher, excels as a combatant who skillfully employs agility and firepower to inflict harm on adversaries, positioning him as a formidable force in battles. His unique trait allows for continuous reloading of his primary weapon during use of his arm-specific abilities, furthermore providing an additional health boost.

With his Bionic Hook, he keeps a safe distance from The Thing while inflicting critical damage. At the same time, this ability allows him to move strategically across the map. He can bridge gaps between himself and opponents thanks to his skills, capable of executing them both at a distance and in close combat.
As a fan, I’d say, “Though I have a larger health reserve compared to most Duelists, his regenerative abilities make him quite formidable against The Thing. He’s a challenging adversary, indeed.
