The upcoming Netflix series, adapted from Harlan Coben’s novels featuring the character Myron Bolitar, has attracted a well-known producer. Renowned television producer David E. Kelley (known for The Lincoln Lawyer) will be working alongside Coben as co-writers and co-executive producers, according to Deadline.
In the past, Coben struck a deal with Netflix, resulting in several of his books being transformed into shows. When the agreement was renewed in 2022, Netflix gained access to 11 Bolitar novels and a novella titled “Win”. It’s fitting that Coben collaborates with the author, as he also has “The Lincoln Lawyer”, based on Michael Connelly’s series of novels, streaming on Netflix.
Kelley is a well-known and productive television writer and producer who has created some of the most successful shows from the past few decades, such as L.A. Law, Ally McBeal, The Practice, Presumed Innocent, and many others. Not all of these shows are legal dramas; in fact, Kelley penned Lake Placid, a story about a massive crocodile causing chaos in a small Maine town. Additionally, he developed Doogie Howser, M.D., Picket Fences, and Chicago Hope.
The Bolitar series holds significant importance for Netflix, as author Harlan Coben once expressed to Deadline his guardedness towards the beloved Bolitar character – a former athlete in basketball, who transitions into representing celebrities and athletes as an agent.
Without a doubt, Myron Bolitar holds a special place in my heart. Out of the 34 books I’ve written, a third feature Myron Bolitar; he is my most cherished creation, and I am thrilled that he now belongs to Netflix, enabling us to put forth our best efforts in getting it just right. It’s one of the intellectual properties I’ve taken extra care with. Moving stories like ‘The Stranger’ or ‘Stay Close’ to another country is less challenging, but Myron, being a series character that readers return to time and again, requires more attention and should remain in the USA.
From where I stand, things are progressing swiftly with the project, hinting that we might see casting decisions unfold within the coming months.
Netflix and Coben Already Have Multiple Hits
Since Netflix signed a production deal with Harlan Coben in 2018, numerous shows based in different countries have been created and broadcasted by the streaming platform. For instance, “Fool Me Once,” a popular show on Netflix, is British. More recently, there have been two additional series set abroad, such as the Spanish-speaking “Caught” (premiering March 26) and the Polish-language series “Just One Look” (which premiered on March 5).
In awe of Coben’s globally acclaimed novels, it’s no surprise that Netflix has been adapting books tailored to different markets. Titles like “Missing You,” “Stay Close,” “The Stranger,” “Gone for Good,” “The Innocent,” “The Woods (2021),” “Hold Tight,” and another adaptation of “The Woods” have all graced the screen on this popular streaming platform.
Coming up next on the streamer with Coben, they will present “I Will Track You Down,” which marks their first U.S.-based series. This gripping tale adapts the novel of the same name and focuses on a father, portrayed by Sam Worthington from “Avatar,” who is wrongfully incarcerated for a crime he didn’t commit – the murder of his son.
