At last! Here’s the long-awaited first trailer for Mike Flanagan’s upcoming drama titled “The Life of Chuck“, starring Tom Hiddleston. This heartwarming tale, premiering at TIFF 2024, is based on the 2020 novella by Stephen King, a renowned fiction writer. The drama, both written and directed by Flanagan, has garnered positive reviews since its inception, boasting an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some critics have even hailed it as the best adaptation of a King work to date. Now, the anticipation is building up for audiences across the country as the film hits theaters on June 6, distributed by NEON. And with the release date comes the trailer, which you can watch below.
The Life of Chuck has been generating significant buzz since it clinched the People’s Choice Award at TIFF. Now, with the release of the trailer, excitement for this Hiddleston-led film is reaching new heights. The narrative revolves around the life of Chuck Krantz, portrayed by Hiddleston, as suggested by the official summary: “An intriguing tale unfolds in reverse, beginning at the end of Chuck Krantz’s life and retracing the steps that led to his lived experiences.” The trailer, much like a well-crafted one should, leaves more to the imagination but effectively establishes the three pivotal periods of Chuck’s life that are expected to resonate deeply with viewers.
The play has earned a reputation for being incredibly touching, much like many of King’s other dramatic pieces. The preview delves into the emotional depth of the story so profoundly that it carries the tagline “created from the heart and soul of Mike Flanagan,” which is evident from the response the film received at its premiere. A comment under the trailer shared by NEON reads, “I saw this back at TIFF last September. You have no idea how powerful and heart-wrenching this movie is.” So, grab your popcorn and tissues because it’s going to be an emotional ride on June 6.
Stephen King Is Always About More Than Just Scares
Instead of focusing on his horror hits, which there are many of, the trailer sets the stage for a drama from Stephen King by mentioning his beloved movies of the past that don’t deal with monsters and creatures of shadows. Instead, it name-checks those King film that touch on something more terrifying – the horrors of real life, such asThe Green Mile,Shawshank Redemption, andStand By Me. While most fans don’t need to be reminded of the multi-best-selling author’s writing chops, it’s nice to show audiences that they’ll encounter a life-changing narrative like those they’ve loved before.
The most comprehensive insights about the movie are derived primarily from the reviews of people who were fortunate enough to witness its premiere at TIFF. A user on Letterboxd even commented that the film comes close to being as flawless as the original novel.
About two weeks ago, I had my first read of “The Life of Chuck”. I must say, I was completely amazed by it! Stephen King’s writing was both hilarious and deeply moving, with a unique touch that made it all the more delightful. After finishing the story, I found myself gazing blankly for about ten minutes. The movie version is quite faithful to the book except for a few adjustments, but I knew from the very last page that it would be enchanting in Mike Flanagan’s hands. And indeed, it was. I cried throughout most of it. Without a doubt, this is one of Flanagan’s finest works.
Mike Flanagan even wrote a review full of gratitude after the debut moved so many audience members.
Among the unforgettable evenings of my professional journey, this night stands out significantly. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of you who attended this exceptional, one-time viewing event.
Goodnight, and joy be to you all.” – Mike Flanagan
