In the continuing court case involving Blake Lively and her co-star/director Justin Baldoni from “It Ends With Us”, a confidential decision known as an “attorney’s-eyes-only” ruling was given to Blake, granting her access to specific sensitive details related to the legal matters brought forth by both parties.
Actress Blake Lively is taking legal action against actor Ian Somerhalder over his alleged inappropriate conduct on the set of “It Ends With Us” and for supposed retaliation against her, as stated in a lawsuit filed in December. The ensuing media coverage, publicist squabbles, and Lively’s legal grievances have led Somerhalder to file a defamation suit against Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds. As the court date for their May 2026 face-off approaches, Lively has asked that certain sensitive documents be kept confidential, as both parties involved in this case are public figures and there’s a possibility of leaks occurring.
On Thursday, Judge Lewis Liman consented to this and cautioned that sensitive data might be disclosed if attorneys chose to divulge it to their respective clients. The lawyers handling the case are the sole individuals authorized to access information such as stars’ confidential details (including trade secrets and actor safety protocols), medical records, and what is termed as “extremely private and intimate details about unrelated parties.” Even the clients themselves will not be permitted to view this information.
Judge Liman pointed out that the chance of a leak could be significant,” he remarked, hinting at the possibility of rumors and speculation arising from the possible dissemination of information during the discovery process.
The argument made by Baldoni’s lawyers wasn’t about concealing the information from media or general public, but rather it was about the restriction that prevented them from disclosing the details to their clients. This impediment complicated the case and could potentially cause additional legal disputes between the involved parties.
In his ruling on Thursday, Judge Liman did not grant Lively’s legal team all the materials they had requested. Instead, he limited the scope of these materials that would be provided to attorneys, stating that only information deemed “very likely” to cause substantial harm to business, commerce, finance, or privacy should be disclosed.
He also said that secrecy here will make the discovery process “speedy.”
Lively’s grievance alleges that during the shooting process, Baldoni made highly inappropriate remarks, coerced her into situations of a sexually compromising nature without consent, and subsequently collaborated with his publicists on a social media strategy to tarnish her reputation after she voiced her concerns.
Baldoni is filing a lawsuit for $400 million against Lively, Reynolds, and their public relations representative. This lawsuit accuses them of extortion, defamation, and violating the terms of a contractual agreement.
The trial date for the case is set for May 29, 2026.
