Looking back at the American adaptation of ‘The Office’, an iconic sitcom, you’ll discover a wealth of hilarious scenes featuring Brian Baumgartner’s character Kevin Malone. Despite not being particularly skilled at his job in the office, he consistently delivers laughs as you watch this NBC series, either with a Peacock subscription or another viewing method. A memorable line from Baumgartner, which he often quotes during speaking engagements, can be traced back to Season 5’s episode “Broke”.
Have you got no recollection of it so far? I’m referring to the time when Kevin subtly greeted Andy Buckley’s David Wallace with a late “Hi,” and Idris Elba, who portrayed Charles Miner, seemed about to break character. Intrigued as to whether Baumgartner could provide some insight into this less-famous moment from The Office, I mentioned it during my interview with him about his role on Suits LA, where he worked alongside Patton Oswalt. Here’s what he shared:
It’s intriguing how you brought up the topic of greetings. When I give talks at universities and similar places, I often use the “hi” joke. If there’s a Q&A session, someone will introduce themselves, like ‘Hi, I’m Michelle, I’m a sophomore.’ I usually wait for around 7 seconds before responding with my own delayed greeting. I find that unexpected timing adds humor to the situation. So, in a way, I could claim it as one of my original jokes.
If my previous explanation didn’t help refresh your recollection, let me remind you of the scene from “The Office” which has become a popular quote for Brian Baumgartner in his Q&A sessions:
Just to bring back some memories, here’s the iconic scene from “The Office” that has made Brian Baumgartner famous for this line during his Q&As:
In just one word, Idris Elba nearly broke into laughter. Remarkably, this humorous moment was preserved in “Broke,” and though Luther’s actor maintained his composure, it’s not instantly apparent to the average viewer. Furthermore, Baumgartner explained to me that timing delays can be an excellent resource for humor, stating:
Something intriguing and amusing (to me, at least) are occurrences that happen out of sync or off-beat. And there were a couple of instances when rewatching the show… For instance, I had forgotten about an episode where they were assessing employees by placing beans on their names. So I began questioning, ‘What does a bean mean?’ and carried on. In the end, at the climax of that scene, you can hear my voice echo again, asking, ‘What does a bean mean?’ That’s what I find entertaining.
The “bean scene” originated in Season 6 of “The Office,” specifically in the episode titled “The Promotion.” If this doesn’t inspire you to revisit some of Kevin Malone’s hilarious antics, I’m not sure what will. Interestingly, Brian Baumgartner, who played Kevin, tried to break free from being typecast by appearing on “Suits LA,” where his character supposedly “killed” Kevin. In reality, however, Baumgartner continues to cherish the time he spent as Kevin, and it’s evident that he still warmly greets fans at events with his signature “Hi!”
The funny moment with the bean is from an episode of “The Office,” Season 6. If this doesn’t make you want to watch more of Kevin Malone’s humor, I don’t know what will. Brian Baumgartner, who played Kevin, attempted to avoid being only known for that role by appearing on a different show (“Suits LA”), where his character “killed” Kevin. But in real life, he still enjoys the time he spent as Kevin and is always friendly with fans at events, greeting them with “Hi!
