Instead of preparing for his own James Bond audition, Michael Fassbender unexpectedly became a promoter or booster for his rival.
The actor who was nominated for an Oscar appeared on a recent episode of the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, and he shared a funny story about how he inadvertently helped Daniel Craig get the role as 007 in the 2006 movie “Casino Royale,” instead of promoting himself during his own audition.
Following a question posed by host Josh Horowitz about any genuine Bond discussions involving Fassbender, the X-Men actor admitted, “I had a meeting with Barbara Broccoli casually, and during that time, I even went through an audition process before Daniel Craig was chosen. However, I don’t believe I was ever seriously considered.
However, I recall entering that room to meet with her and Michael G. Wilson, and I believe I exclaimed something along the lines of ‘Daniel Craig is…’. It’s strange, I seemed to be advocating for him instead of myself, when it should have been the other way around,” he went on to say.
In response, Fassbender humorously admitted, “I was dreadful during my auditions,” and later mentioned that his audition for Mad Max: Fury Road was disastrous due to his tardiness.
As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but wish that Michael Fassbender, the star of “Prometheus,” had the chance to step into James Bond’s iconic suit. However, despite not getting that opportunity, he had only admiration for Daniel Craig, who spearheaded the franchise for five films from 2006 to 2021, taking over after Pierce Brosnan. In his words, “Daniel did an outstanding job and went on to become, in my opinion, the most successful Bond ever. But alas, there was no discussion about it after that.
Over time, numerous actors have been considered for the part of James Bond, but ever since Daniel Craig’s last appearance in “No Time to Die” (2021), there has been much anticipation over who will take on the mantle of 007 next. Although a decision hasn’t been made yet during this ongoing search, the franchise underwent a change when it was disclosed that Amazon MGM Studios would take over creative control for the James Bond series. Wilson and Broccoli will still retain co-ownership of the 60-year-old brand.
Craig has consistently held high regard, esteem, and affection for Barbara and Michael. Previously, he expressed this in a statement regarding the agreement. He wishes Michael an extended, peaceful (and well-earned) retirement and hopes that whatever endeavors Barbara embarks on will be remarkable, and he aspires to be involved.
