Initial responses to Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s movie “Warfare” are popping up on social media, and it seems the general opinion is that this is a powerful, gruesome, and heart-wrenching film that demands to be seen in cinemas.
A narrative of actual events from the 2006 Iraq War, Warfare portrays a fierce battle, and chronicles a group of Navy SEALs who find themselves pinned down in a residence under relentless enemy fire.
Alongside sharing the director’s role for the movie, Mendoza (an Iraq War veteran) was also a co-writer of the script for “Warfare” in collaboration with Garland. The film draws heavily on Mendoza’s personal experiences during the conflict and is a sequel to Garland’s highly anticipated 2024 release, “Civil War.” “Civil War” was A24’s most expensive production to date and ranked second only to their highest-grossing film globally after the Oscar-winning “Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Similar to the gritty and intense film Black Hawk Down (2001), the movie Warfare boasts a large cast of talented up-and-coming actors, including D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Cosmo Jarvis, Kit Connor, Finn Bennett, Taylor John Smith, Michael Gandolfini, Adain Bradley, Noah Centineo, Evan Holtzman, Henry Zaga, Joseph Quinn, and Charles Melton.
Warfare is set to hit theaters on April 11.

I’m utterly astounded by the portrayal of war in #Warfare. It’s gruesome, authentic, terrifying, and one of the most distressing representations of conflict on-screen. The film unfolds like a suspenseful horror movie, building tension. One scene was so intense that I had to cover my ears. Truly impressive film. The use of “Call On Me” in this production is the best I’ve ever seen. #A24

Without doubt, the movie “#Warfare” by Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza is the most gripping film I’ve seen this year. It masterfully draws you in, placing us squarely in a desperate predicament as soldiers find themselves under siege inside a house under attack.
The pace seldom lets up, offering minimal respite and plenty of heart-pounding action…

Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza’s “Warfare” is a raw, gripping, intense, and powerful film that leaves a lasting impact. It’s one of the top movies to watch this year, offering an exceptional tribute to the extraordinary sacrifices made by this courageous group of soldiers. Remarkable work, indeed. Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland’s “WARFARE” is outstanding cinema that vividly portrays the grim reality of war in an intense, engaging manner. It has left quite an impact on me, and it will likely linger in my thoughts for some time to come. (I’ve also been pondering over “CIVIL WAR” recently.)

Intense, unyielding, persistent – WARFARE transcends being merely a war movie; it’s an immersive journey. Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza eliminate the glamour, providing a gritty, heart-pounding exploration of contemporary conflict. The sound design is breathtaking, the action is gut-wrenching, and the tension remains unbroken…

Completely captivated by #WARFARE. Without a doubt, one of the most realistic and emotionally intense war films I’ve ever watched – and surprisingly, one that glorifies war the least. From the very beginning, Warfare draws you in, placing you squarely in the heart of a failed mission. You feel as if you’re…

Battle scenes envelop viewers deeply within the turmoil of war, offering a gripping, real-time sensation that only a handful of movies can replicate for its immersive intensity. The storyline is a continuous sequence of pain, skill, confusion, disorder, brutality, and courage, expertly woven by directors Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza.

In an extended period, the battle scenes in this film were exceptionally gripping – a level of intensity I haven’t experienced in a while. The direction, sound design, and acting were all top-notch, with Joseph Quinn particularly standing out. His performances never fail to impress me. Overall, it was a very engaging movie.

Warfare is raw, thrilling, and overwhelming; it’s a full-scale sensory attack! Undeniably, it’s one of the most genuine and lifelike combat films ever created. It deserves to be witnessed on the grand screen! The sound design team should definitely be in line for awards next year @A24.

#Modern Warfare offers a crushing, unyielding, and utterly destructive portrayal of conflict. My pulse races, my senses are jolted, and I’m still catching my breath. This isn’t just another war film… it’s an immersion. By eliminating any semblance of spectacle, it delivers the unvarnished reality of warfare.

In WARFARE, there are no complex or multi-layered characters, which makes it easier for Mendoza and Garland to immerse us deeply into an intense, high-pressure environment with one of the best sound designs of the past decade. The narrative may lack depth, but instead, it leaves the audience questioning the reasons behind the brutalities of war.

#Warfare: Garland skillfully creates an illusion of safety before unexpectedly shattering it, making the event all the more shocking. Yet again, the sound design plays a pivotal role in a Garland film. It turns out I was watching established actors. We are alongside these boys.

It maintains a heart-pounding tension throughout, with outstanding performances and an incredibly impactful soundtrack. This film embodies realism at its core, leaving you breathless and in awe. A truly remarkable piece of art!
