When people generally imagine Ellen Pompeo, it’s usually Grey’s Anatomy that springs to mind first, not her brief appearances on series like Law & Order and Friends. However, this might shift in the 2025 TV schedule as the veteran television actress is set to transition to streaming services for Hulu subscribers. In its recent Thursday night lineup, ABC was advertising both Grey’s Anatomy and Good American Family, making it somewhat surreal to see two different Ellen Pompeos being promoted from one commercial break to another.
On Thursday, March 13th, I turned on ABC to catch the latest episode of 9-1-1 where Maddie’s life was at risk and Eddie might be moving to Texas. When Ellen Pompeo’s voice came on, it wasn’t Meredith Grey that I heard, but a different character. Although I’ve grown accustomed to hearing Pompeo on ABC’s Thursday nights after she left Grey’s Anatomy as a regular, it was still quite an unusual situation. This oddity intensified when, about 20 minutes after the first preview of Good American Family, ABC aired a promo for Grey’s featuring Pompeo as Meredith.
Essentially, Ellen Pompeo appeared extensively on television last Thursday night, although she doesn’t regularly star in any of ABC’s current programs at present. Interestingly, this strategy proved effective in drawing my attention towards Good American Family. Regrettably, the commercial break was brief and only offered a sneak peek instead of the full two-minute trailer, but it piqued my curiosity enough for me to seek out the complete preview and gather some information about the show’s upcoming premiere on Hulu, which is set for Wednesday, March 19. Here’s a chance to check it out yourself:
As a passionate advocate for “Good American Family,” I’m thrilled to be part of a cast that includes Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid, who join Ellen Pompeo as co-leads. We also have some exceptional recurring guest stars like Dulé Hill, Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Jenny O’Hara. What makes this project even more intriguing is that Pompeo, in addition to her acting role, is an executive producer. This gripping series unfolds from multiple perspectives across eight episodes, and it’s not your typical tale—it’s inspired by a true story of a Midwestern couple who adopt a girl with a rare form of dwarfism, but soon grow suspicious that there’s more to her than meets the eye. Unlike my usual character of a surgeon, this time around, Pompeo is taking on a different role.
As the Hulu streaming debut of “Good American Family” draws near on March 18, it’s not surprising to see a strong promotional effort on the network that was once Ellen Pompeo’s long-time home!

I find the concept of “Good American Family” appealing and excited to see Ellen Pompeo stepping into her first series regular role outside of “Grey’s Anatomy.” Since the Hulu series is described as a limited one, it seems unlikely that her character will endure as long as Meredith Grey did over the course of 440 episodes on the show that brought Pompeo widespread recognition among television viewers. At this moment in time, she has been credited with appearing in that many episodes of the show.
