Hey there! I can hardly contain my excitement as a fan of the timeless Western series, “Young Guns,” which first graced our screens way back in 1988. Guess what? After a whopping 35 years, it’s official – we’re getting another installment! The one and only Emilio Estevez announced yesterday that the production of “Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive” is set to take place in New Mexico. And The original cast member Lou Diamond Phillips and Christian Slater, who joined us in “Young Guns 2” back in 1990, are also set to return. It’s going to be one wild ride, folks!
Yesterday, Estevez declared the news during Film and Media Day at Santa Fe’s State Capitol, alongside Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. “The initial ‘Young Guns’ movies highlighted New Mexico’s breathtaking scenery to the globe and played a significant role in establishing our state as a top-tier filming location,” she commented, further explaining:
In the third installment of Young Guns, titled “Dead or Alive,” it will strengthen the legacy we’ve built, reinforcing New Mexico’s significant role within the national movie scene.
It’s likely that some of you have already caught wind of this. We’re officially getting things moving on the production of Young Guns 3, as Emilio Estevez announced. He jokingly referred to it as either Old Guns or Ancient Guns. Alongside directing and acting, Estevez is also contributing as a co-writer for the film. Filming is scheduled to commence this fall in New Mexico. As for the storyline, specifics are being kept secret, but it’s rumored that it will introduce a fresh group of Regulators to the public.
‘Young Guns’ Is An Endearing Western Classic
Regardless of some inaccuracies in its historical portrayals, Young Guns was a blockbuster success upon its debut in 1988. With an initial investment of $11 million, it generated a staggering $56 million at the box office – a sum that undoubtedly benefited from its lineup of popular young actors. As part of the Brat Pack, Emilio Estevez was under intense scrutiny, but it’s important to recognize the contributions of Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen, Phillips, and Dermot Mulroney, who collectively propelled this Western to stardom.
1990 saw the release of “Young Guns 2,” a follow-up film that, thanks to fresh talent like Slater, was equally successful. Again pushing the boundaries of historical accuracy, it still managed to capture audience attention. The movie’s financial success can be attributed in part to Bon Jovi, whose popular track “Blaze of Glory” was featured and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song (although it was overshadowed by Madonna’s “Sooner or Later” from “Dick Tracy“).
The manner in which Young Guns 3 will reunite is uncertain at this stage, given that it’s improbable for the film to adhere closely to historical facts, considering the advanced age of its returning stars portraying figures like Billy the Kid, Jose Chavez y Chavez, and “Arkansas” Dave Rudabaugh. However, does the historical accuracy truly matter? Young Guns never claimed to be an educational resource, but rather a source of pure entertainment for Western enthusiasts who enjoy a good gunfight. Naturally, the tale needs to be engaging, so let’s hope Estevez and his team don’t solely depend on nostalgia to draw audiences to cinemas.
We’ll share updates about “Young Guns 3” as developments unfold. In the interim, don’t forget to watch the 1988 version, currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
