Ryan Hurst is now part of the expanding cast for Christopher Nolan’s action-packed saga set in ancient Greece, titled The Odyssey, currently being filmed in Morocco. Matt Damon portrays the legendary figure Odysseus in this production. Known for his roles on FX’s Sons of Anarchy and AMC’s The Walking Dead, Hurst is the latest actor to join the already impressive cast, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. At this time, the specific role Hurst will play in the story remains undisclosed, leaving us wondering how he might contribute to the narrative, which is based on Homer’s epic poem of the same name.
The poem recounts the tale of Odysseus, who sets out for a ten-year voyage back to Ithaca following the Trojan War’s endurement of a decade. Throughout his journey, he encounters numerous hardships, one of the most significant being Poseidon, the sea deity, seeking retribution against Odysseus due to him blinding the cyclops Polyphemus, his son. In Nolan’s reinterpretation, it appears that the focus will be on Odysseus’ arduous journey; however, a large prop hinted at on set suggests that the background story may also be touched upon, either through a prologue or flashback scenes.
In my perspective, though the character I’m set to play in this grand tale remains concealed, there’s a wealth of opportunities waiting for me. My past performances have showcased my adaptability, with my portrayal of Harry “Opie” Winston in Sons of Anarchy embodying the ‘strong-silent’ essence, and my role as Beta in The Walking Dead revealing a more menacing side that could potentially make life difficult for Odysseus if I assume an antagonist’s part. Some of my other notable roles include those in Remember the Titans, We Were Soldiers, and most recently, portraying Milligan in the Disney+ series Mysterious Benedict Society.
Who Plays Who in Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’?
In the upcoming film “The Odyssey,” Damon has landed the main part. Other big-name actors in this star-studded cast include Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Mia Goth, Corey Hawkins, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Samantha Morton, Bill Irwin, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal. This month also brought on board a well-known actor from the “Shogun” series for an unspecified role, much like several other announced roles that remain undisclosed at this time.
Although Universal Pictures hasn’t explicitly confirmed the characters that actors will portray, Greek media sources claim to have revealed some of their roles. One such actor is Tom Holland, who is said to be playing Telemachus, the adult son of Odysseus and Penelope. In the original tale, Telemachus embarks on a quest to find his missing father, and photos from the set suggest that Holland’s character will be traveling by ship for part of this journey. The destination remains a mystery until The Odyssey hits theaters on July 17, 2026.
