After wrapping up an extended movie production, you might find those around you developing a sense of kinship reminiscent of a family, even with the occasional setbacks and rocky paths leading up to the exciting declaration, “It’s a wrap!” This camaraderie is amplified when the team shares living quarters in a secluded place, such as rural New England, where they filmed a horror-comedy production like “The Parenting“. Now available for streaming on Max, MovieWeb recently spoke with the director and some of the stars to delve into the distinctive aspects of making this film.
The director, Craig Johnson (known for “The Skeleton Twins”), shared that they filmed the project in Concord, Massachusetts. The team stayed in an old manor, which felt somewhat haunted. Each person had their own room. Parker Posey lived below me, and she would tap on the ceiling to summon me when she wanted to see me. This allowed us to spend time together and grow closer. Filming can sometimes feel like a summer camp experience. Since we were all in it together during this project, and since everyone was stuck inside the house, it created the ideal dynamic for bonding.
Dean Norris (from Breaking Bad) shared that the cast he was working with seemed incredibly close, even in a short period of time. He explained, “[Scene partners] Lisa Kudrow, Parker Posey, and I lived together, with Edie Falco just next door. Off-set, we had a blast! We’d have movie nights, game nights, dine out together, and the boys would come over to play games. Sometimes we’d even cook meals. Parker would often cook, and we simply enjoyed spending time together.” Norris added:
Additionally, we came up with some spontaneous scenes not originally scripted – for instance, Parker and I would pretend our characters were having an affair, creating tension, which wasn’t part of the film but was entertaining. Lisa Kudrow and I often improvised humorous responses to one another off-screen as well, making people laugh with our unscripted antics. All in all, it was a fantastic cast, a wonderful camaraderie, and friendships that have endured until now.
Surrounded by “Legends”
Besides the main cast, Vivian Bang (known for “Always Be My Maybe”) also plays a significant role. In an interview with MovieWeb, she shared the enjoyable times they spent together. “I was starstruck by Parker Posey, who I’ve always admired, and Edie Falco – these legendary actresses I used to watch on TV,” Bang said. “During filming at the table, we were all part of a family meal. Despite the conflicts and troubles depicted, it felt surreal to be there, wanting to be accepted as part of this family, even with its challenges.
In “The Parenting” production, Nik Dodani (known from “Atypical”) takes on another role as one of two couples trying to smoothly introduce their parents to each other. According to him, the team often watched reality TV together, cooked meals collectively, and even had a spooky experience by conducting a seance. He also shared that he and his co-star Brandon Flynn went stargazing at night, making the entire process feel like shooting during the day and being at summer camp at night. Overall, it was an exciting, enjoyable time for everyone involved.
