If one of your favorite versions of the famed webhead from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) was Spider-Man Noir — voiced to perfection by Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage — then fret not. That’s not the last you’ve heard from the scene-stealing webslinger. In fact, Cage will be reprising his role in glorious live-action form with a highly anticipated new Spider-Man series for MGM+, Spider-Noir. It features a stellar cast alongside the celebrated star, including longtime performer Lukas Haas (Brick, First Man). MovieWeb recently caught up with Haas while he was promoting the release of his new caper film High Rollers, a quick follow-up to last year’s release Cash Out. Haas also took time to reflect on his experience shooting Spider-Noir.
“It was a really, really cool project to be a part of. I had a great time working on that. Nic is so cool and awesome,” Haas told us. “And Brendan Gleeson is amazing. He plays my boss. And it’s really an authentic film noir, you know, the way they filmed it. In fact, even the monitors, like, playback — it was in black and white, and with the shadows […] It really felt like you were watching yourself in the 1930s, the way that they made the look of the video.” Haas continued:
The story is great. The writing is great, everybody involved. And I’m super-excited about it. I know it’s going to take a while before that comes out, but I’m waiting with anticipation because I think it’s going to be a lot of fun.
Teaming Up With Travolta Yet Again
In the meantime, Haas plays the comic-relief brother to John Travolta’s leading man in a pair of heist films, the latest having just been released to the masses. Haas shared with us whether High Rollers, the second go-around, felt any different working alongside the iconic Travolta than their initial caper film.
“He’s just such a lovely guy and so easy to hang out and work with. You know, every morning you get to set, and he gives you a hug. Like, he’s just a very warm person. And this is an icon, obviously, so you’re not really expecting that, you know? But he’s just very, very easy to hang with. And he’s super professional. Obviously, he’s, you know, one of the best in the business. So, yeah, I would say it was sort of more of a continuation, but we’re just even more familiar with each other. And it felt really easy going.”
Haas has been in the acting game for decades, and Travolta has been leading films for even longer. Haas weighed in on some of his favorite flicks featuring his co-star from over the years. “Pulp Fiction is one of those real classics that we all watched, you know? Any film buff watched it over and over,” he said. “Grease was one of those… when I was in high school, the girls were obsessed with that. So we’d watch it all the time. But so many of them… all the way back to Welcome Back, Kotter… I used to watch Nick at Nite and those kinds of channels, so I would watch those shows. And yeah, he’s been killing it for such a long time, so I’m just a fan of a lot of his movies.”
From Saban Films, High Rollers is now available in theaters, on demand and on digital platforms.
