Digimon Con set to unveil new project, could a digital TCG be on the way?

  • The upcoming Digimon Con 2025 has teased a new TCG announcement
  • It’s strongly hinted to have something to do with mobile
  • Could a potential Pokémon TCG Pocket competitor be in the works?

For fans of the long-running franchise Digimon, the upcoming Digimon Con 2025 is sure to be a red-letter day. You can look forward to plenty of new announcements and updates about forthcoming projects in the franchise, but it’s one particular teaser that’s caught our eye featuring a confused Renamon and a mobile phone.

Now, the obvious conclusion I think we’re drawing is that this might be an indicator of some kind of digital version of the Digimon TCG. There’s already a tutorial app available for iOS and Android (as is the case for many of Bandai Namco’s physical trading card games) but in the wake of Pokémon TCG Pocket, it certainly wouldn’t be unprecedented.

At the same time I feel it’s also prudent to restrain ourselves just a tad as there’s no indication whether the teaser itself is pointing to mobile being a platform for this new project or just an avenue for watching the upcoming livestream later this week.

Going digital

I think it’s fair to say that Digimon is, while not unpopular, definitely eclipsed by Pokémon. Back in the late ’90s and 2000s, there was always a bit of competition there, but while Digimon may be the connoisseur’s choice for nostalgic anime fans, Pokémon has been the one to take the global pop culture crown for now.

So a digital TCG would not necessarily be an easy win as it is for the folks at Pokémon. But then neither would it be that much of a risk as the Digimon TCG is still popular, and making it accessible for more players would be a major coup. I suppose we’ll just have to tun into the upcoming Digimon Con livestream later this month and see.

In the meantime if you want to find some new releases that you can play right now, why not check out some of our reviews? Last week Jupiter jumped into the hotly-anticipated Good Coffee, Great Coffee to see if it was worth its weight in, er- coffee beans.
