In 2023, James Gunn became the first director to slip the first F-bomb into the MCU, but a year before that
creator Tony Gilroy almost did the same for the Star Wars franchise. Although many movies and TV shows with 12A or TV-MA ratings drop an F-bomb into their stories, the Star Wars universe has been profanity-free for almost 50 years. It seems the only thing that stopped Star Wars becoming one of the “cool kids,” was Lucasfilm – and Gilroy now agrees that it was probably for the best.
The finale of Andor Season 1 came to a dramatic end and featured a holo-recording from Fiona Shaw’s Maarva Andor. During an impassioned speech urging the people of Ferrix to rise against the might of the Empire, the line “Fight the Empire” is shouted. However, that line was originally meant to be more offense to sensitive ears…you can probably guess which word would have been changed.
While at the time it felt like the mighty hand of Disney coming down to quash the arguments put forward by both Gilroy and director Benjamin Caron, Gilroy now believes that perhaps they were right after all.
“The whole experience with Kathy [Kennedy, Lucasfilm president] and Lucasfilm and Disney, all the way through from Rogue One… I mean, nobody has ever messed with us at all. The gamble they’ve taken with us, the way they’ve backed our play, it’s extraordinary. It’s the thing every filmmaker dreams about. They’ve been unbelievable. So yeah, they were right.”
‘Andor’ Season 2 Will Be Amazing and F-Bomb Free
It is clear that the Star Wars universe is not ready for real-world profanity, and over the years the franchise has created some of its own curse words that have found their way into the story of the galaxy far, far away. For that reason, we really shouldn’t expect to see the first F-bomb drop during Andor Season 2, and it really doesn’t matter.
Andor stands as one of the highest-rated projects in the Star Wars universe, and there has been a lot of effort put into making sure that nothing slips during its second and final season. While everyone knows where Andor’s story is heading, this series was all about the journey, and it has been a journey that many have enjoyed more than most other Star Wars offerings from the last 20 years.
The series released an extended synopsis last year, which read:
“The twelve episodes of Andor Season 2 will carry the story of Cassian Andor and the emerging rebel alliance over the climactic four years that lead to the discovery of The Death Star and the events of Rogue One. Season 1 followed Cassian’s reluctant journey from cynical nobody to revolutionary volunteer. Andor Season 2 will see him transform from soldier to leader to hero on the way to his epic destiny. From the very first scene, Cassian’s story has activated an ever-widening ensemble of allies and enemies. Season 2 will see these relationships intensify as the horizon of galactic war draws near. Everyone will be tested and, as the stakes rise, the betrayals, sacrifices, and conflicting agendas will become profound. Who will live to see their dream realized? Who will realize what the dream cost?”
