For a studio that has made its name with high-octane, visually impressive racers, Hutch’s newest release may be a bit of a departure. Matchcreek Motors, freshly released for iOS and Android, puts the racing on the shelf in favour of more casual match-three puzzling with a light dusting of story.
The basic premise is simple, you play as the brother of the (former) owner of Matchcreek Motors. When your erstwhile sibling skips town, it’s left up to you to save the business and make it a success. To do so you’ll solve match-three puzzles, before customising and restoring a variety of vehicles to then sell to the highest bidder.
If you’re thinking this seems just a tad familiar then you’re probably having flashbacks to previous releases like Forza Customs which have tackled this kind of formula with mixed success. But where they’ve failed Hutch may have the chance to make this a reasonable hit thanks to their previous experiences with auto-based releases.
Smokey and the (match-three) bandit
One advantage Hutch possesses is the top-notch vehicle models they provide, evident in their trailers. Although it’s challenging to innovate within match-three games, if the main attraction is customizing cars (a subject people are incredibly enthusiastic about), it’s beneficial to ensure the cars look appealing.
It also helps that these are actual, officially-licenced, cars from Ford, GMC and others. So if nothing else I’m sure those of you who’re looking for a bit of substance to go with their casual puzzling fun can find plenty to enjoy with Matchcreek Motors.
