As artifical intelligence continues to be a rising topic in the filmmaking industry, some of the highest-grossing directors of all time continue to advocate for the controversial use of the technology. The Russo Brothers, who just released The Electric State on Netflix to career-worst critic reviews, just confirmed some fans’ worries about their potential use of AI in their big-budget productions.
In a not-so-unexpected twist, Joe Russo, in an interview with The Times, confirmed that The Electric State used AI in its post-production process. AI voice modulation was employed by the filmmakers for the Netflix movie, a kind of technology that Joe says is “something any ten-year-old could do after watching a TikTok video.” Although he is not necessarily wrong, as plenty of TikToks have been using a rudimentary kind of voice AI for quite some time, it might be alarming that a $320 million movie had to cut corners in such a fashion. Nevertheless, to Joe, the future is AI.
Due to a lack of understanding and fear, there’s currently a lot of blame-shifting and exaggerated statements being made. However, in time, you will notice AI becoming increasingly prevalent in various aspects of our lives.
And while Joe thinks AI is still developing and can’t be used for “mission-critical work,” it is quite useful for filmmaking, saying, in its “generative state, AI is best suited towards creativity.” Despite consistent trepidation by revered directors, actors, writers, and everyone in between about the increased use of AI in the industry, it seems the Russos want to be ahead of the curve. After all, even the Oscar-winning film The Brutalist used AI in relatively small doses, and it did not cost it any trophies during the awards season. However, a full-blown endorsement of AI use throughout the creative process has been a rare one for filmmakers, but the Russos see it as an inevitable part of the future of the industry.
The Russo Brothers Believe AI Is the Inevitable Future of Filmmaking
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Joe Russo doubled down on how artificial intelligence is part of the future of moviemaking and all creative endeavors. To him, as AI continues to grow and evolve as an emerging technology, it is inevitable that it will leak into the creative process. Of course, he understands it must be something that they have to “remain in control of,” but reinforced the belief that it will form part of the aforementioned filmmaking experience.
“We have to approach AI the same way we approach all technological innovations. It’s potentially a valuable tool, but it’s the kind of tool that artists always have to remain in control of, but there’s going to be some valuable role in the creative process and the filmmaking process.”
It is unclear if their upcoming Avengers films, Doomsday and Secret Wars, will employ AI at some point, but Marvel Studios is no stranger to using the controversial technology. As the Russos embark on yet enough big-budget production, which will shoot back-to-back at the end of the month, MCU fans hold out hope that AI will not be prominently used for the team-up sequels.
