The highly-anticipated MCU sequel Spider-Man 4 is slowly building out its cast ahead of its summer 2026 release. Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is the latest actor to join the Tom Holland-led franchise, and her casting has been the center of countless rumors within the fanbase. Her character in Destin Daniel Cretton’s new movie has yet to be revealed, but that hasn’t stopped fans from convincing themselves that she’ll be playing an Omega Level mutant. With the X-Men officially owned by Disney and a part of the MCU, most of the fandom is convinced that Sink will be the MCU’s Jean Grey, a.k.a. the Dark Phoenix. However, the actress is shutting down those rumors.
During an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Sink shut down the rumors that she’ll be playing Jean Grey in the MCU… kind of. “This is news to me,” Sink said, dancing around the question. The actress didn’t outright deny that she is playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man 4, but the answer was far from the confirmation some fans were hoping for. However, even if she has been cast as the character, she is likely under contract to not reveal that information until Marvel Studios are ready.
“I have nothing to say about this,” she continued. While Sink might not be playing Jean Grey in Spider-Man 4, she did reveal that she loves the character, and was pleasantly surprised by all the rumors online following her casting. “The rumors are really cool though,” she continued. “It’s an awesome rumor. Yeah, I know that character. It’s a great character, so that was cool to read.”
Sadie Sink Might Be Playing Another Major Marvel Character
A good part of the MCU fanbase is divided about who Sadie Sink might be playing in Spider-Man 4. Half of them believe she will be Jean Grey, eventually allowing for another Phoenix Saga after two poor attempts in Fox’s X-Men universe. However, the other half is convinced that Sink could be the MCU’s Mary Jane Watson. For years, we were led to believe that Zendaya’s MJ was the famous Spider-Man character in disguise (her last name is Watson, after all). However, given the ending to Spider-Man: No Way Home, which saw MJ and Ned forget who Peter Parker is, it has opened the door for Parker to meet someone directly named Mary Jane.
Again, this is nothing but a rumor. Spider-Man 4 is expected to begin production this summer. Expect more plot, character, and casting details to be revealed closer to the production date once the script has been finalized. However, knowing Marvel Studios’ penchant for secrecy, we will likely learn very little (apart from some unfounded rumors) until the movie has finished production and the company begins the film’s marketing campaign.
So far, all we know about Spider-Man 4 is that Tom Holland is confirmed to return once again and will now be joined by the Stranger Things star. Additionally, the movie is being directed by Shang-Chi’s Destin Daniel Cretton, who is taking over from Jon Watts. Spider-Man 4 is currently slated to release on Jul. 31, 2026.
