Robert Downey Jr.’s MCU Return as Doctor Doom Will Shock Fans

The shocking revelation that Iron Man star
will return to the MCU as new character and major supervillain Doctor Doom came as a controversial surprise to fans when it was announced at San Diego Comic-Con last year. Details of how exactly this will work have remained under wraps ever since, with fans offering their own theories and ideas about why Doom has Tony Stark’s face. Now, one half of the Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars,
, offers some intriguing insight…and may have confirmed one of the most popular fan theories.

Discussing Avengers: Doomsday and Robert Downey Jr.’s casting while speaking with The Times, Russo teased how Iron Man’s death in Avengers: Endgame, and the actor’s involvement, will shape the story of the Avengers sequel.

“We can’t explain that as it’s part of the story. But there’s nobody else in the world who could play this character the way he’s about to.”

Based on these words, there are two possible fan theories that could now be true. The first is that Robert Downey Jr.’s take on Doctor Doom is, in fact, a variant of Tony Stark, with the character’s semi-resurrection sure to have a huge impact on his former superhero allies. Particularly Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. The second, and far freakier theory, is that Victor von Doom – knowing the impact it would have on the Avengers – either takes Tony Stark’s face in a Face/Off style operation, or swaps bodies with the beloved genius billionaire playboy philanthropist.

Doctor Doom & Tony Stark Switching Bodies Has Happened Before

Citing precedent, the latter outcome has happened in the comics, with Doom and Stark switching bodies and seeing how differently their lives would have turned out in a Freaky Friday-esque situation. However, this could add a lot of unnecessary complications to Avengers: Doomsday, particularly when compared to the idea of Doom simply being a Stark variant. Whichever approach the Russo Brothers take with adapting Doctor Doom, it is unlikely to be the comic book character that Marvel fans have adored for decades. So, expect a lot of controversy and disappointment.

Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars arrive at a time when the MCU is beginning to seriously buckle under its own weight. Several of the most recent movies and Disney+ shows have been met with criticism, with many feeling that the franchise now needs saving. Thankfully, one MCU star thinks the Russo Brothers are just the duo to bring the MCU back from the brink.

Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt, who has reunited with the directing pair for Netflix’s The Electric State, simply answered “Sure” when asked if the Russos can get the MCU back on track. “They know that it’s the mundane, human brokenness of characters that drives stories and makes the Avengers great. They have this ability to find the humanity,” he added. We’ll find out if he was right when Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.
