Transformers director
returns to the big screen. But rather than a tale about giant alien robots, the filmmaker instead keeps things grounded (so to speak) with a documentary all about Storror, a group of parkour and freerunning athletes.
has now debuted at SXSW 2025, and the first reactions have since emerged, with critics having praised Bay’s deliriously kinetic vision of the aerial urban acrobatics.
Critic @SiddhantAdlakha took to X/Twitter to share that We Are Storror is nothing less than “incredible,” praising the documentary for offering insight into the group and how they deal with being aging athletes, its reflection on more universal themes and, of course, “dizzying” parkour sequences.
The Michael Bay-directed* “We Are Storror” is absolutely incredible. A dizzying stunt doc about an aging parkour group that puts into perspective the passage of time and the thrill of moving images throughout history. Praying for an IMAX release. #SXSW2025
The praise continues courtesy of @strangeharbors, who says, while it’s “Easy to goof on a parkour doc in 2025,” We Are Storror “is a near-perfect marriage between filmmaker and subject matter: exhilarating drones, sweeping kineticism, jaw-dropping blocking. Touched by its treatise on how little time we have to do the things we love.” These sentiments were shared by @HertzBarry, who said, “Michael Bay’s sky-high, tear-jerking version of JACKASS. IMAX needs to buy this and market it as the movie too terrifying to watch. Between this and AMBULANCE, Bay is only director allowed near drones. One star for every time I nearly threw up (at least 5).”
‘We Are Storror’ Even Had Some Critics Crying
There were some criticisms, with @JacobTalks4ever calling We Are Storror “compelling” but “its hyper-kinetic style makes things feel a bit repetitive at times.” However, they do conclude that “it’s cool to see a Michael Bay film with so much genuine heart at its core.” The movie, which marks Michael Bay’s documentary debut, is described as “beyond incredible” by @AndrewJ626, who adds, “It’s an equal collaborative effort with Storror, with a good amount of the footage shot and edited by themselves, but it’s all interwoven by a high-adrenaline narrative of brotherhood that’s classic Bay.”
Believe it or not, We Are Storror even had some critics, including @AnshWeyy, crying. Which is sure to come as a major surprise to those who have seen, well, any of Michael Bay’s other movies. Okay, fine, a lot of people cried at the end of Armageddon, but still.
“We are Storror; Breathtaking. Bayhem infused into reality to make something so maximalist while being confined to the real world. Absolutely just as unhinged as Bay’s body of work, but so beautiful and intimate. Yeah, I cried watching a parkour documentary.”
Produced and directed by Michael Bay, We Are Storror implements drones and GoPro cameras to capture parkour stunts like never before. We Are Storror follows the titular group, which was established in 2010 by brothers Max Cave and Benj Cave, as well as Drew Taylor, and who were later joined by Toby Segar, Callum Powell, Sacha Powell, and Josh Burnett-Blake. The group made their big screen debut in Michael Bay’s Netflix action movie 6 Underground. You can check out the official synopsis for We Are Storror below.
At the peak of a death-defying career, the 7 friends of parkour team Storror embark on what could be their final project: a globetrotting quest to conquer 4 extreme environments. Faced with harrowing accidents and personal conflicts, the team grapples to maintain the bonds that have united them since their beginnings as ragtag street kids. From Michael Bay, this immersive documentary delves into these thrilling athletes who command over 10 million YouTube subscribers and nearly 3 billion views. Equal parts adrenaline and heart, the film takes you to the edge and asks: What’s truly worth risking your life for?
