Prime Video’s God of War is part of the company’s plan to transform countless beloved video games into live-action TV shows. Following the success of Fallout last year,
announced several new adaptations were in the works, including the aforementioned God of War. The video game franchise, created by Santa Monica Studio, began in 2005 with God of War which received two sequels, but gained a second life when the fourth entry (also titled God of War) was released in 2018 and received its own sequel, God of War: Ragnarök. It is that version of Kratos that showrunner Ronald D. Moore will likely bring to the screen in the series. However, he recently made a shocking confession that is sure to anger fans of the video game.
During an appearance on The Sackhoff Show, Moore admitted that he isn’t a gamer and hasn’t played much of the God of War franchise. When host Katee Sackhoff brought up the pressure of adapting such a beloved franchise, Moore admitted, “Yeah, and I’m not a gamer, so it’s even more like, ‘Okay, I’ve never done this before.'” Moore admitted that he attempted to play one of the God of War games when he signed on as showrunner, but his journey across the nine realms ended very quickly. He continued:
“I’ve tried. I’m not a gamer. I took a stab at it. I grew up in the arcade era. I can do that. I can play Defender, or Asteroid, sure. But, the controllers now… I can’t quite get over that. My kids, of course, do it like it’s nothing. My wife can do it.”
The reveal has understandably left some fans anxious about Prime Video’s God of War adaptation. But it’s worth remembering that fans felt the same way about Fallout until executive producer Jonathan Nolan revealed he was once completely addicted to the franchise during his early writing career.
‘God of War’ Has Already Been Greenlit for Season 2
While his revelation about not playing the games is a dour note for fans, Ronald D. Moore did also provide a very positive update on the show’s likelihood of finally making it to the screen, and Prime Video’s belief in the project.
“It’s a big title in the gaming world, that Amazon has ordered two seasons of,” he said.
Moore was brought in as showrunner last October, after the previous showrunner, Rafe Judkins, exited the series. The report from last year revealed that Judkins had completed multiple scripts. However, Amazon wanted to take the show in a different creative direction. Ronald D. Moore revealed that he is “in the writing room right now” writing the scripts for the first season. No major details about the adaptation have been revealed. Fans are desperate to learn who will play Kratos in the live-action series, as the titular God of War is a character that has been fan cast for years online. The front-runners within the fan base include Dave Bautista, Liev Schreiber, and Kratos’ original actor in the video game series, Christopher Judge.
