If you missed the Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown, either at the theater or streaming (if you paid for it) on Amazon Prime Video, you might be in luck. That is if you have a Hulu subscription. To be fair, Hulu is worth paying for, even if you don’t want to see Timothée Chalamet turn into the folk-rock icon. (Hulu has not been asked to pay for this free advertisment.)
But for our purposes here, we have the information you need to stream A Complete Unknown for free, if you have a Hulu subscription. The movie is definitely worth watching, even though it whiffed on every Oscar award it was nominated for. That was eight total, for those keeping score at home.
Chalamet plays a young Dylan who has recently moved from Minnesota to New York City in the early 1960s. He gets acclaim for his folk songs and seems on the cusp of being one of the leaders of a musical movement that was important at the time. But, ultimately, Dylan did not want to become pigeon-holed, and wanted to not only be related to folk.
A Complete Unknown will be arriving on streaming service Hulu soon
He wanted to rock, too, but his newfound fans were not yet ready to accept his rocking. The film runs through 1965 when Dylan shows up at the Newport Folk Festival and literally plugs in. Instead of wonderful acoustic instruments with heartfelt vocals, Dylan turned his part of the show into something akin to a cardinal sin for festival goers.
The cast of the movie is fantastic. Chalamet is as great as always. Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, and Scoot McNairy as Woody Gurthrie are also brilliant. Even if you don’t care about Bob Dylan, the film is worth watching for the performances alone.
So when does A Complete Unknown arrive on Hulu? We are almost there. The release date will be Thursday, March 27. The film will also be available for purchase on Blu-ray and 4k UHD Blu-ray (if you still own that kind of technology) on April 1.
