Over her career, Keira Knightley has taken on a variety of memorable roles, such as in the lighthearted teen comedy “Bend it Like Beckham,” the classic romance “Pride & Prejudice,” the drama “Atonement,” and the historical thriller “The Imitation Game.” However, for many fans, she will always be remembered as Elizabeth Swann, the courageous and quick-thinking heroine from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series. Despite making pirating and swordplay appear effortless on screen, Knightley encountered challenges during filming, particularly with stunts.
In a behind-the-scenes clip recently shared by the Instagram account Cineatomy, Knightley revealed that she initially thought the movies based on theme park attractions would be a breezy job. But she quickly realized the action-packed role had other plans for her. She recalled:
Initially, when I glanced at the script, I thought it would be a breeze, with me lounging in carriages, donning elegant dresses, and subtly expressing displeasure now and then. However, what I didn’t anticipate was the considerable amount of stunt work involved, which, considering my laid-back nature, has proven to be quite demanding.
A particularly tense instance arose when she was required to take a high dive from a ship’s platform. For two full days on the plank, she was utterly terrified. However, when director Gore Verbinski offered her an exemption from the stunt, she refused to back off. She went on to say that…
When it was time to take the leap, Gore, the director, suggested, “You don’t need to do this; Sonya, your stunt double, could perform the stunt instead.” But I had been standing there for two days, and he wondered if I wasn’t going to jump off this structure.
Showcases determination indeed! Despite her apparent fear, she broke into a grin as soon as she dived into the water. In her own words, here’s how it went:
To be honest, I couldn’t help but break into a grin as I emerged, it was an extraordinary moment. I was simply overjoyed to have made it into the water safely, knowing I was still breathing, and that the shark hadn’t suddenly surfaced and taken a bite out of me. In essence, it was a fantastic experience.
It’s fair to assume that Keira Knightley’s role in Pirates of the Caribbean exceeded her expectations, as it was more akin to top-tier action films than she likely thought. With thrilling sword fights and daring escapes, Elizabeth Swann proved her mettle, standing shoulder to shoulder with Jack Sparrow and Will Turner, becoming one of the most beloved characters in the series.
Despite leaving the series following “At World’s End” (with a brief reappearance in “Dead Men Tell No Tales”), the characterization of Elizabeth by the actress from Black Doves has become iconic. It’s fascinating to note that she performed many of her own stunts, which adds an extra layer of awe to her already impressive performance.
