Over the past week, Stephen King fans have been treated to a feast of exciting news. Just after the release of The King Beat last Thursday, we saw the first teaser trailer for Mike Flanagan’s The Life Of Chuck pop up online. And just two days ago, it was announced that Darren Aronofsky is in discussions to direct the Netflix remake of Cujo, produced by Roy Lee. This collection of news is truly a treat for fans, and with more details on Flanagan’s film set to be revealed soon as it approaches its summer theater release, I thought it would be fitting to focus this column on the upcoming remake – diving into the topic of casting.
As of now, the remake of ‘Cujo’ is still at its early stages (no screenwriter has been assigned yet), which means it might be some time before we get official updates on cast members. However, this phase of development offers a perfect opportunity for engaging in exciting speculation. Furthermore, this week also marks the anniversary of one of Stephen King’s most acclaimed short story collections. Let’s delve into these topics!
What Would A Darren Aronofsky-Directed Cujo Remake Look Like With Experienced Stephen King Stars?
When it comes to eagerly awaited projects, just like many fans, I indulge in some fan casting. But for Stephen King adaptations, I take things up a notch by imposing a personal constraint – I only consider actors who have previously worked on other King projects. This rule isn’t too stringent given King’s extensive screen history that spans nearly half a century, but it certainly adds an extra layer of excitement to the process.
Over the past few months, I’ve had some exciting ideas about castings for upcoming projects like the Firestarter remake and the developing Holly series. However, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to dream up an ensemble for a hypothetical Darren Aronofsky-directed Cujo this week. Here are my imaginative suggestions!
I regret to say that I won’t be able to choose Tad Trenton from our list of actors for fan casting. Despite his significance in the story, it’s challenging to find an appropriate actor given his young age. The selection of child actors with past experience in Stephen King adaptations is rather limited. As a result, we might end up casting a newcomer, similar to how Danny Pintauro was chosen for the 1983 film.
Rebecca Ferguson As Donna Trenton
The role of Donna Trenton is one that carries significant weight, to put it mildly. Dee Wallace gives an exceptional performance as Donna in the Lewis Teague-directed adaptation of Cujo, and I wholeheartedly concur with Stephen King that she deserved at least an Academy Award nomination. The challenge of playing such a complex character also presents a unique opportunity, and one that I believe Rebecca Ferguson would seize. She is truly remarkable as the malevolent Rose The Hat in Doctor Sleep, and could easily deliver a captivating portrayal of a mother who must confront the guilt of an affair while fighting for her life amidst a heat wave with a rabid St. Bernard trapped inside a broken-down car.
Jason Clarke As Vic Trenton
In 2019, Vulture labeled Jason Clarke as “Hollywood’s Preferred Cuckolded Actor,” and I find it intriguing to delve deeper into this unique cinematic trajectory. Before taking the lead in the remake of Pet Sematary, Clarke played characters who were unfaithfully loved in four films (The Great Gatsby, All I See Is You, The Aftermath, Mudbound), and he has continued this trend with his role in 2020’s The Devil All The Time. Playing Vic Trenton in Cujo could add an impressive sixth title to this distinct filmography, as the character embarks on a moving journey after discovering Donna’s infidelity while he is out of town for business (unaware that she is simultaneously battling for her life).
Glen Powell As Steve Kemp
Admittedly, I’m getting ahead of things since Glen Powell won’t officially become a seasoned Stephen King adaptation actor until the November release of Edgar Wright’s “The Running Man.” However, his impeccable fit for the role of Steve Kemp is something I couldn’t ignore. The ideal actor for this part should have an irresistible charm to seduce Donna Trenton into an affair, yet possess a knack for playing the aggressive, abrasive character when Steve Kemp retaliates after their relationship ends. Powell’s past performances clearly show that he excels in both areas.
Yul Vazquez As Roger Breakstone
frankly, Roger Breakstone doesn’t have the largest or most significant role in the novel “Cujo,” as he is Vic Trenton’s business partner and confidant. However, this type of part can be made more impactful by a skilled character actor, and Yul Vazquez seems to be an ideal choice for such a performance. The essence of the role – a blend of professional and familial – bears some resemblance to what the actor portrayed in his role as Lieutenant Yunis Sablo (Ben Mendelsohn’s partner in Ralph Anderson) in “The Outsider” from 2020. This prior performance gives me reason to believe that he would do justice to the material.
Mark Hamill As Joe Camber
Initially, Mark Hamill made his appearance in a Stephen King movie without credit in “Sleepwalkers”, being the first film to be based on an original King screenplay. More recently, he’s re-entered this realm with roles in the upcoming films “The Life Of Chuck” and “The Long Walk”, and there’s speculation that he might excel as Joe Camber in “Cujo”. The character of the drunk and abusive owner of the titular dog is quite distinct from Luke Skywalker, yet Hamill has shown exceptional skill in embodying sinister undertones in the Netflix series “The Fall Of The House Of Usher”. There’s a lot of anticipation for his villainous role in “The Long Walk”.
Patrick Wilson As Sheriff George Bannerman
In the works of Stephen King, Sheriff George Bannerman is an established character who plays a crucial role in many Castle Rock stories. To portray this complex character effectively, an actor with charm and authority is needed, and Patrick Wilson fits the bill perfectly. So far, Wilson has only appeared in one King project – playing the eerie Ross Humboldt in “In The Tall Grass” on Netflix – but his commanding presence suggests he could easily shine as the hero of George’s story in “Cujo”, especially when his tale takes a tragic turn.
Currently, the casting for Cujo is just speculation and wishful thinking, but let’s keep our fingers crossed that the project progresses swiftly through its development stages. Hopefully, we’ll hear news about actors joining soon. In the meantime, make sure to stay updated here on TopMob for all the latest news!

Wishing A Happy 23rd Anniversary To Everything’s Eventual: One Of Stephen King’s Best Short Story Collections
It’s tougher for me to pick my favorite Stephen King short story collection compared to his novels because it’s hard to compare individual stories against each other when there are many of them. As a result, I usually hesitate to declare any of his multiple collections as the best, but if I had to choose one title that stands out, Everything’s Eventual would be a strong contender for the top spot.
Exactly twenty-three years ago, on March 19, 2002, this remarkable book made its debut on bookshelves across stores. To celebrate this anniversary, I’d like to wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t had the pleasure of reading it yet. This book spans various genres, offering a rich tapestry for readers – from Roland Deschain’s supernatural western adventure in “The Little Sisters of Eluria,” to the gritty gangster tale “The Death of Jack Hamilton,” the intense drama of “All That You Love Will Be Carried Away,” and the captivating fantasy “Luckey Quarter.” However, true to Stephen King’s style, it’s the chilling tales of horror that linger most vividly in one’s memory.
Among the remarkable tales, I found myself particularly captivated by three: the chilling “Autopsy Room Four,” the eerie “That Feeling, You Can Only Say What It Is in French,” and the suspenseful “1408.” However, if I were to single out a favorite, it would be none other than “The Man in the Black Suit” – an unnerving tale of a boy’s harrowing coming-of-age journey with the devil. This gripping story, nestled within Everything’s Eventual, leaves you with an icy shiver that lingers long after turning the final page.

If you’re seeking an engaging read before drifting off to sleep, perhaps this isn’t the book for you. However, if you’re up for an exceptional anthology of short stories that will leave you shivering repeatedly, I highly recommend “Everything’s Eventual” by Stephen King as your next read. Check it out and enjoy!
In summary, this week’s episode of The King Beat has come to an end, but if you’re someone who can’t get enough of news about Stephen King, remember to drop by TopMob each Thursday for our regular feature delving into the latest happenings in the world of this acclaimed author.
