For numerous admirers, Ben Affleck stands out as one of the top Batmen depicted on the big screen, yet his tenure in the superhero universe wasn’t without its challenges. Critics were less than enthusiastic about Batman v. Superman , while the production process for Justice League was fraught with difficulties. Affleck’s journey through the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) wasn’t smooth sailing. Moreover, many viewers found his portrayal of Batman to be overly grim and somber, a sentiment that Affleck himself came to share after realizing he wasn’t fully catering to his audience’s preferences.
During a chat with GQ, Affleck openly discussed his experience playing Batman in the DCEU and the moment he noticed an issue when his own son became apprehensive about watching his first superhero appearance. The Academy Award-winning director acknowledged that the creative conflicts between the studio and DC Universe’s creatives led to a product that, in his view, was polarizing for viewers.
The situation became challenging as it became overly mature for a significant portion of our viewers. In fact, my son found it too frightening to watch. When I realized this, I exclaimed, “Oh dear, we’ve got a problem.” It seems that the filmmaker was determined to persist with this direction, while the studio aimed to attract the younger audience again, leading to conflicting goals. Essentially, you had two parties wanting to take different paths, which is a recipe for disaster.
More to come.
