Among the many debated Star Wars tales, one that’s arguably the most contentious is unexpectedly gaining traction, even after its unexpected termination. Launched in June of last year, the Star Wars prequel series The Acolyte became another polarizing journey across the stars. Although Disney has now ended the show, a recent article indicates that the calls for The Acolyte Season 2 are more intense than anyone anticipated.
Based on research by Parrot Analytics, who analyze viewing metrics, streaming data, and other factors, demand for Season 2 of “The Acolyte” is significantly higher than the average, standing at approximately 20.8 times greater. This strong call suggests that it’s a promising choice for additional investment and development. Although there has been a slight decrease in fan demand (from a peak of 22.6 times the average), “The Acolyte” continues to be exceptionally well-regarded within the drama genre, ranking at the 99.3rd percentile. This high rating indicates a devoted and actively engaged audience, which should impact acquisition and programming decisions positively.
Though Disney doesn’t automatically change their plans for “The Acolyte,” which was unexpectedly terminated following its final episode in August last year, it’s clear that they are closely examining the strong interest in seeing more of this series. This increased demand could potentially lead to a revival of the “The Acolyte” franchise in the future.
Why Was ‘The Acolyte’ Canceled?
This new information was revealed after it was discovered that, despite some heated and even harmful reactions, The Acolyte turned out to be quite a hit among viewers. In fact, it ranked as the second most watched show on Disney+ in 2024, trailing only Percy Jackson and the Olympians which claimed the top spot with over 3 billion minutes viewed. The Acolyte came in close behind with approximately 2.7 billion minutes watched.
It seems the Star Wars series was discontinued due to some fans’ strong negative reactions (while critics praised its performances), but the primary reason suggested by co-chair of Disney Alan Bergman was the show’s high production cost. In other words, despite satisfactory ratings, the expenses associated with producing another season didn’t justify the investment required for Acolyte.
Produced by Leslye Headland for streaming on Disney+, the series titled “The Acolyte” boasts a talented ensemble cast consisting of Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Charlie Barnett, Dafne Keen, Rebecca Henderson, Jodie Turner-Smith, Carrie-Anne Moss, Manny Jacinto, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, Margarita Levieva, Lauren Brady, Leah Brady, Harry Trevaldwyn, and David Harewood. The inaugural season is currently streaming, and for more insights into the plot, you can read the official summary provided below.
