The Assassin’s Creed team on Twitter (let’s not use code names yet) recently responded to Elon Musk. Frankly, it’s refreshing to see creators standing up against the persistent harassment they face.
The video game Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been met with numerous criticisms. Initially, some members of the digital gaming community found it objectionable and disrespectful towards Japanese culture. However, even though they expressed strong opinions against its success, it was a minority voice amidst the understanding that an Assassin’s Creed game set in feudal Japan would be highly profitable for the company.
In this challenging situation, Elon Musk chose to voice his opinion. This multibillionaire, known for turning things sour, took issue with streamer Hasanabi over a seemingly grave mistake – accepting a sponsorship to play a video game. According to the individual who benefits from boosting in Path of Exile (as Ubisoft gently corrected him), the game was objectively subpar.
As a gamer myself, I can say that Assassin’s Creed: Shadows might not be everyone’s cup of tea. If you feel strongly that the recent changes have ruined it for you, feel free to express that opinion. If you find yourself bothered by the supposed lack of historical accuracy in a series where a fictional character like Ezio Auditore engages in fights and kills a pope, then by all means, share your thoughts. However, if you’re not going to approach these topics with a nuanced perspective, it might be best to keep those discussions to yourself.
To be honest, I’m not particularly fond of the franchise, except for a handful of games that offer a satisfying open-world experience. However, it seems we’ve reached a critical point, and those who anonymously criticize the developers’ work online, often escalating their negativity to unhealthy levels, should realize there are real people behind the screens. They read, whether positively or negatively, the majority of the comments and feedback directed at them.
Instead of focusing on the large, corporate entity known as Ubisoft, consider whether it’s beneficial to be an active member of a persistent, vocal minority that perpetuates this continuous loop of conflict. Perhaps it’s time to log off Twitter, launch a game you appreciate, and simply immerse yourself in the enjoyment it offers.

If developers choose to behave in a way that’s questionable or unethical, they should still have the right to defend their actions without being unfairly criticized by many. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t mean they are completely exempt from criticism. As consumers, we have every right to express legitimate concerns if we’re investing our money in this beloved hobby. The fact is, the costs can be high, and unfortunately, some top executives are making things worse as they strive for better returns to satisfy their stakeholders. In many cases, the actions of these higher-ups certainly warrant criticism, such as in the case of Shadows.
As a gamer, I can’t sugarcoat it: The main beef with AC Shadows isn’t rooted in genuine goodwill. Instead, it often springs from folks who had no intention of buying the game in the first place. They seem to relish the opportunity to take aim at something, even if it means going after a game created by a gaming legend like Hideki Kamiya, who’s openly backed Ubisoft and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
It’s genuinely unfortunate that Ubisoft felt compelled to create an “anti-harassment” policy for the developers of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. If you happen to be one of those individuals sending harassing messages to these creators through their professional and personal platforms, perhaps it would be beneficial to pause and consider more constructive outlets for your discontent.
Let’s think about the kind of energy we share on social media, shall we? Perhaps it’s worth considering that our negative comments might be falling on someone who doesn’t have the power to respond or defend themselves. After all, a social media manager is just a person trying to do their job.
