Fred Rogers, known from the beloved show Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, was undeniably one of the kindest figures in public life and became an enduring symbol on PBS and children’s television (as depicted in the semi-factual movie A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood). His friendly demeanor and gentle nature have inspired numerous spoofs imitating his long-running series (1968-2001). Among these parodies, one notable example is Eddie Murphy’s creation for Saturday Night Live, Mr. Robinson. Interestingly, the original Mister Rogers acknowledged and enjoyed the sketch titled “Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood,” expressing his appreciation in a friendly and neighborly manner.
In preparation for SNL‘s 50th anniversary special slated for 2025, the SNL team (through NBC Insider) shared memories of one of their most hilarious recurring characters, Eddie Murphy’s Mr. Robinson. This character, a humorous take on a kids’ show personality, was introduced during Season 6 and remained a staple throughout Murphy’s run on the show, even making a comeback for his 2019 episode. While there were similarities in the way he spoke and his unique shoe-tying habits, these were just a couple of the parallels; essentially, it ended there. The character of Mr. Robinson provided comic relief by highlighting the amusing contrasts between two fictional worlds.
In 1982, on “The Late Show with David Letterman”, Fred Rogers addressed various people mimicking him, including their late-night sketch show version. The host of the children’s show and author posted a photo of himself and Murphy together, mentioning it was nice to meet the comedian from “Raw”. He then spoke about his feelings towards others imitating him in his characteristic, genuine, and compassionate Mister Rogers manner (as reported by People).
To be honest, not all of them make me laugh, but I believe many of them are genuinely filled with warmth and good intentions, don’t you agree?
In an interview, he mentioned that he didn’t appreciate someone suggesting on a radio show for kids to use hairspray and lighters at the same time – something he found unsafe. However, he found the portrayal of him on 30 Rock amusing, considering his friendly demeanor both on-screen and off.
It’s no surprise he found the spoofs amusing; the Mr. Robinson sketches are truly excellent. I wouldn’t be shocked if the Fred Rogers I knew as a child appreciated and welcomed the hilarious Saturday Night Live portrayal. If you haven’t seen the iconic Eddie Murphy versions of Mister Rogers, they can all be streamed using your Peacock subscription.
Don’t miss out! The 50th season of our show resumes this coming weekend, March 29. Our first returning hosts will be Mikey Madison and Morgan Wallen, who will also serve as musical guests. Tune in live on Sunday night at 11:30 p.m. Eastern Time, or catch it the next day with a Peacock account via streaming.
