Sarah Polley, known for her acting roles in horror films such as “Dawn of the Dead” and “Splice,” and her directorial work on “Stories We Tell” and “Women Talking,” has clarified her role regarding an upcoming adaptation of “Bambi.” Contrary to previous reports suggesting Polley’s involvement as a director, she recently disclosed that she was not “formally tied” to the project. The project aims to bring a live-action remake of the beloved Disney classic to life, following in the footsteps of movies like “The Lion King” and “Snow White.
Currently, Polley is making a comeback to acting, this time in a series where she portrays herself. In an interview with Vanity Fair, she discusses her involvement in Seth Rogen’s unique exploration for Apple TV+ titled The Studio, a comedy series that delves into the intricacies of Hollywood. Initially hesitant about appearing in front of the camera once more, Polley expressed her delight: “I’ve never really acted like myself before… However, I couldn’t be happier. Each day was possibly the most enjoyable I’ve ever experienced on a set. It truly was. It was almost embarrassing how much fun I had.
During the interview, Polley was queried regarding the live-action remake of Bambi. It appears this project has been underway since 2020, with Disney opting to make it a musical. Here’s what she shared about her role in the contemporary retelling of one of cinema’s most heartrending animated films:

During the conversation, Polley talked about the ongoing development of the live-action Bambi movie, which Disney intends to be a musical. She shared some insights on her participation in the latest rendition of this famous tear-inducing cartoon:
I didn’t have an official commitment to it; our discussions were more like casual conversations. There wasn’t a formal agreement or my signature on any documents, so it was more of a buzz on the internet than a tangible project. While we did communicate, I was primarily engaged in other projects that demanded my attention. However, I do find the idea of remaking that movie intriguing. The concept of a mother dying young resonated deeply with me, and I believe I could have created something quite poignant if given the opportunity.
Following the completion of two feature films, Polley chose to concentrate on directing in 2010. She then produced the compelling and intimate documentary “Stories We Tell“, followed by “Women Talking“, a film she wrote and directed in 2022, based on Miriam Toews’ novel of the same name. This captivating production received numerous accolades and was even nominated for two Academy Awards, including Best Picture. On the most prestigious night in Hollywood, Polley won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Sarah Polley Returns to Acting in Seth Rogen’s Apple TV+ Series ‘The Studio’
It’s unlikely that Sarah Polley is working on or planning to work on a live-action adaptation of Bambi, as there doesn’t seem to be any indication that this project is a high priority for Disney at the moment. Given that recent live-action adaptations by Disney haven’t been particularly successful, it may be for the best that Polley didn’t pursue more projects of this kind.
Despite her current enjoyment at working on Rogen’s “The Studio”, it seems that she has new projects up for grabs, as she recently shared: “Being part of this project rekindled my passion for acting… Perhaps I didn’t truly realize how much I loved acting because I started so young, and had limited control back then. Film sets were vastly different when I was a teenager and in my early twenties; I experienced many odd and challenging situations.
As a film enthusiast, I must confess that the allure of treading the boards once more isn’t completely off the table. At present, I don’t foresee myself diving headfirst into an intense acting career, but if the right opportunity arises in the future, count me in! The intricate process and commitment required for filmmaking can sometimes make it logistically challenging. However, I never imagined myself being open to acting again, but here we are.
